Granite

I went to a rock and gravel yard near my house and they have some granite. So my question is can I use this granite for soil?

I used to use it in my soil. The size was 1-3mm I believe what I used to use. Had to wash it thoroughly as it had a lot of powder which would of clogged the soil mixture. I don't use it anymore because it made carrying the larger trees even more difficult as it is so heavy compared to what I use know. Otherwise I found it very good.

Hi

I get my crushed granite at the feed store, and have found it at a hardware store during the winter (for icy sidewalks).

The crushed granite or chicken/turkey grit comes in four sizes 1-4.
1 is the smallest size, I use this in my shohin mixes. I use the bigger sizes 2 and 3 in my large bonsai soil mixes.

Crushed granite does a couple things for soils. Obviously it creates a great drainage medium first and foremost. Secondly it's sharp edges help split/divide the fine feeder roots for a healthier root system.
