Bonsai nare-do-well

Alan's was a Divi-divi. A cool little tree. Looks a bit like the raintree but the leaves are much smaller.
A buttonwood stump is an excellent thing to use. It is really rot resistant and will last for years. Tropical plants are good to use with tanuki's. But it does seem like everyone is stuck doing them with junipers. My favorite tropical to use is the black olive. I was going to use it for my tanuki but had to use shimpaku's which were the only things I had which were tall enough. I did do one just for practice the day before the contest. I put black olives on a cypress knee. Won't last forever but it was a fun thing to do. |

To answer Charles question, whether I had made a typo, the answer is YES!
I went back to the old Mary Miller's small magazine "Bonsai with Tropicals" and in copy May/June 1997 issue 5 on page 8 there is a picture of Jim Moody with his favorite Rain tree. In the article , Jim said it was his sister-in-law, Eugenia, who was a nurse in the American embassy...." the year was 1978 when Eugenia sent the seed pods. I hope the time spent researching my typo, will teach me a lesson!!!!!! ![]()

On page 1 of this string I mentioned a possible connection between "halitosis" trees and working heights. Am surprised that I have received no comments on my remarks. Does that mean that you all agree with me

A tree leaning back seems to be one of the most basic problems that is fairly easy to fix. So 'halatosis' breath just needs a little bit of acid reducers and listerine.

Once again, Ron, you have come up with a memorable description. Gee, I must have sweet breath (in spite of my wife's opinion). My trees tend to lean toward me However, I suspect your hypothesis has merit. I do a lot of jumping up and down to overcome that problem. Regards, Bart |

Charles:
Hold on to your hat... That tree of yours is going to keep you hopping. Keep that scissors handy.... Here's one of my rain trees. This picture was taken in July. It has changed a great deal since that picture.

Nice tree Carl!
I have had to do a lot of trimming on my trees lately. I go out and tidy up all of my tropicals about once every 2 weeks because they have been growing so quickly. This is my only brazillian raintree that I own. Before I had it I had always thought of them as slow growers, now I see that I was wrong. It has been growing like crazy. Has anyone heard from Ron lately? Last I heard from him he was heading to the North Carolina Arboretum exibit.

Ron is here. Got back last night around 1:30 Am. Needless to say I am pooped. Just put on about 2400 miles on the old truck. Summerville SC to Vero Beach FL, Jupiter Fl, Lake Charles La. Baton Rouge La, Atlanta Ga and finally home. Did a lot of bonsai along the way. Met a lot of nice people. Got a sore butt. Even trimmed up a small shimpaku with a fellow in a rest area in Alabama. (go figure) Needed to get a pot to put a forest in so I made the mistake of stopping by Guy Guidry's place in LA. Got three pots there. Those three filled up the cargo bed of my Ford pick up. ( a small 51"x31" , 87 lb bit of nothing each) Guess I had better get going on that forest I wanted to do. It might be a bit bigger that I planned on thought. I also found a place in Baton Rouge to get slate slabs. Only got two of those. Again "small" about 110 lbs each. Now if I can just find enough trees to put on them without my wife finding out ;o) |

Sounds like you had quite a trip. Did you end up seeing Jim at the North Carolina exibit?
