Grading Ron...
I met Ron today at Jim Moody's place. He did a great tanuki with 3 shimpaku and I believe it was an ilex deadwood. I think that between the three who did tanuki's his was the best.
We also worked on my brazillian raintree. Just to refresh everyone's memory here was the before-

And now the after of the tree. It has a lot of work yet to come, but I think it looks pretty nice. The branches are too long right now, I am waiting for backbudding to cut them back. Now I am going to sound like an ebay seller here, the 2-dimensional picture doesn't do the tree justice. I will have ron to back me up on that on tuesday.
Any suggestions?

Here I am with a little inspiration next to america's first brazillian raintree. Darn, I wish I wouldn't have blinked.

That's one big BR. Did you get any pics of Ron or anyone else's demos for the phoenix grafts? Just curious because I am about to do one my self.
Thanks for sharing ![]()

I do think that you have a very good start. Give Ron a Triple AAA. Rain trees are terrific to work with and I love my two trees. They love full sun, and I am giving them as much as possible before I have to move them in doors.
This may be a little off base as far as rating Ron, but the Brazilian Rain tree you are standing beside and owned by Jim Moody was started from seeds recieved from his sister, I believe in 1989.... I did a painting of that tree for Jim. He sent me the history of that tree, after he recieved the painting . Which, he loves and hangs in his living room. I have included a picture of it.

Just got home a few minutes ago and naturally turned the old computer on. Saw the Grading Ron thing and just had to have a peak.
As soon as I can figure out how to download my fancy new digital camera I will post pictures of the Tanuki's from the contest. Then you can all make up your minds on who lost ;o( |

Might be a bit. I am not too good with this computer stuff. But will do it as quick as I can. Here is a passing thought if anyone is interested. When I got done with all the workshops on Sunday I was setting around batting the breeze with Jim Moody. I commented on the fact that I had to suggest that most of the participants plant their trees a bit more up right when they were done. Most of them had what I call "halitosis" trees. They seem to lean backwards like the one working them had bad breath and the tree was trying to get away from the smell. Good trees but they almost all leaned backwards. Jim smiled and reminded me that we were working on picnic tables. When styling we were all looking down on our trees. All but three members of the group had this problem. Two had bonsai stands with them and brought the trees up to a viewing level to work on them. Our friend and fellow list member Charles put his on the picnic table and stood up. Sorry Charles but you are a bit on the short side, no offense intended. But this did have the effect of bringing his tree up to a viewing level while you worked. Could it be that we need to raise the height a bit when we are working on our trees. Something to think about. Might help a bit And while I am at it I would like to commend Charles. In bonsai I do think that he has more talent that his tender age warrants. Maybe we should all keep an eye on him. Hope all this makes sense. I have just escaped from my truck after 500 miles and my brain is like my butt. A bit numb. Last edited by Ron Martin : 22-Sep-2003 at 09:18 PM. |

Ron thanks for the nice words. I may be assisting Jim Vanlandingham in a few demos at conventions during the next few years. I hope to do a demo myself within the next five years although I am not sure how seriosly people will take me.

Well here is my Tanuki (or Phoenix graft as some call it)
The trunk is from an Ilex vomitorum and the foliage is supplied by three shimpaku's grafted to the back of the trunk. It needs to grow out a bit to bring the foliage in balance with the trunk. Time will tell if it turns out any good. I will post some pictures of the other trees tonight, time permitting |
