Got a plan yet?

I would like to hear of some plans for the spring. What is the main project that will keep you busy all summer. Do you have a plant that you bought this winter that you will work on? Do you have a tree that has went through the training process and will be potted this spring and receive final pinching this year? How about selling off some not so good stock to aquire some good potensai. Best regards, Bonsaial

Re: Got a plan yet?

Since I started the thread, I found it only fitting that I post the first project. The tree was purchased two years ago. The initial pruning was done, and the tree wired. I did nothing except let the tree grow to gain strength. In the spring of 2001, the tree was re-pruned and re-wired. It also went to two workshops with Ted Matson. Ted suggested putting a bend in the top apex portion of the tree. It was straight as an arrow there, and he felt it needed a little movement. I agreed and set about cranking a bend and subsequent twist into the top of the tree. The photo was taken at pot level, and does not do the tree justice. The first branch on the right is very full front to back, about 6 inches in diameter. I introduced some jinned complete branches and some shari on the trunk. The tree is only 9 inches tall and will pe potted into a shohin container next year. Bonsaial

Re: Got a plan yet?

Hi Al,

Ik think that spring will be to short for all the work if have planned. I will repot about 7 or 8 trees, make a Boxwood group, do a restyle on about 5 trees, do an air layer on two or three trees and...and..and.. And then they say Bonsai is relaxing . I don't have any pictures yet since all plants are in winter storage right now. They won't come out until somewhere in march I guess. Temperatures are now in the 10-12 degrees celcius but predictions for februari are frost again so I'll have to be patient. I like your tree by the way. Can you tell me it's size ?

regards, René

Re: Got a plan yet?

Ah.....Spring.... I can almost see it. But, I must admit I am still in Ski mode!! As for projects I am thinking of. Last fall I purchased several red maples with the thought of either trying my hand at a group planting or putting in the ground for a few years to thicken up. I have to decide which way to go! I have a Blue Moss Cypress in the ground that may be ready to start it journey to a pot. Then there are a couple of trees that I may have put into pots that should be returned to growing boxes..... OTHER NEWBIE'S BEWARE do not rush to place your tree in a pot, growth will be very slow, better in a growing box! There is of course the trees that need repotting. I am going to try my hand and collecting. I have been given permission from a landowner to collect some trees from his acreage, hopefully I will be successful!

Re: Got a plan yet?

While browsing a local nursery I came acrost some very old kingsville boxwoods in two and five gallon pots. After some wrangling I have aquired them and now am in the process of pruning back and making cuttings each tree is producing approximatly 50 cuttings and I could go through 70 trees...........well I am going to be very busy this spring. Looks like we will be adding boxwood to the list of things that we are propigating........ripsgreentree
