goodbye summer

I've ben off the net for a while and have been spending a bit more time with my trees than in previouse years. But this year i have noticed the effects of autumn have come much sooner than before. My maples and silver birch have lost their leaves completely now (last leaf fell only a few minutes ago) whereas my oaks and linden are still beautiful and green. Normally all the leaves fall at the same time and i can sort them out for the winter all at once. As my collection is rather small, only a dozen trees unworthy of the name bonsai, i was wondering if it's just mine or if other people in the northen hemisphere are experiencing the same thing?

Cheers
Al

Not so in my case. My trees have not even considered changing yet.

I moved to a warmer climate, and fall here is a couple weeks later than it was in my old place just a 1.5 hour drive north (but right next to a very big lake).

Nice Japanese Maples Andrew! Gotta love those autumn hues.

To be honest, I've not really witnessed a great deal of change in most of my trees. The leaves on my Ginko have yellowed and a couple have dropped. The Chinese elms have a one or two yellow leaves, but are still pushing out new growth. Even my Deshojo and Sango Kaku pushed out some new shoots too only last week. My Dawn Redwood have got a very slight orange tint coming but haven't dropped any foliage. Other than that, everything else is still lush and green.

The daytime temperatures are still hitting 20-24c and the nights are dropping down to about 12c. It's not until mid October usually, that we see autumn here fully. Must be the North/South divide Alasdair

All the best,

Aaron

Hi Aaron.
We only hit 16c here on the east coast!
It was a real winter chill day today even though we had sun.
Where are you?

Hi Caro,

I'm in tropical Northwest Kent lol. Deep in the suburbs. Today was 19c on my thermometer outside in the garden. Wind was been coming from the North / Northeast for the past two days and the air had a bit of a nip in it when the sun went in and the wind blew. Monday it was 22c and last weekend was warmer still. I've been keeping a close eye on it, because I keep on moving my ficus inside at night and carting it back outside to the sunshine during the day.

All the best,

Aaron

I wish I could say that. It's 90-95 degrees F here in South Texas...

Had been 37+ here all this past week and the week before, until today 21! Shall we finally declare a good bye to our oppresive summer? This has been the suckiest summer in more ways than just the heat, and I will not miss it!

Hi Caro
Definite nip in the air here in the Midlands.
I have noticed that my hornbeams and deshojo maples are just starting to show a hint of Autumn colour and the larches are also starting to turn. By my records that is two weeks earlier than last year.
My elms, birches and other maples are still green though.
Night temperatures have been going down to 4C the last three nights.

regards
Mike
