Ginkgo Biloba Hayanari

G'day All,

Can anyone help me track down a picture of a Ginkgo biloba 'Hayanari', this is a Female tree.

I've hunted for a female Ginkgo tree, forever, and at long last found one in Belgium yesterday, will buy it today, but there are no pics avaiable from the same source.

All best wishes,

Nigel

Ozzerbon,
I read that if you look at the end of the seed and see 3 "lines" that meet it will be male; 2 lines that meet and the tree will be female. Here in Indianapolis we have a local park with a massive tree which sheds the stinky little fruits like crazy. I try to pick up those that have had the pulp shed, unfortunately my 3 year old doesn't care, the ride home ranks right up there on the "odemetric scale".

To make it short, I have about 100 in moist papertowels/baggies in the crisper drawer of the refridgerator. They've been there for about 5 weeks now. If you'd like to try to grow from seed I'd be willing to send a few your way. Let me know.

Regards.

Thumbs up

G’day Guys,

Yes I’ve heard of [and only heard of] the reputation that the smell of the female Ginkgo’s fruit has, but do not expect to have too many complications with such a small tree in a pot, should it even produce fruit, as I understand that they must be at least 20 years old before they do that, but I shall learn and accept [I hope] the experience of that, should I live so long [me being 72yr this month].

My specimen is coming from a Belgium Tree Specialist, who judging by his catalogue, [also in English] [see http://www.pavia.be/index.php ] has a very weird and wonderful collection of trees, and before I continue, I feel that I must state that Belgians work extremely hard to guard their reputations.

As a kinda pointer to why I am so excited, I had originally only showed interest in a Ficus carica ‘Laciniata’.
In the catalogue, [see URL] you will discover an excellent pic of the foliage of this fig,
and then as a kinda box-filler I scanned thru his cat’, for something else, and imagine my surprise to discover this Ginkgo biloba ’Hayanari’, to be available and yet even so easy, [after all my years of searching for a guaranteed female tree].

As to fresh seeds, in Amsterdam, one can buy them by the bucket-load from practically any Chinese Toko [food store] at a mere pittance, and they’re practically all viable, being totally fresh [edible fruits/nuts] and yep, I have tried to grow them and that’s dead-easy to do too with 100% germination, as are any cuttings that one might make.

But what I really wanted to know is what does the word, ‘HAYANARI’ mean, or represent?

I shall have my new Ginkgo within the week, shall keep you guys posted, and will include pics. [Just can’t wait, as they say]

Best regards,

Nigel
