Candy--thanks for posting this. You beat me to it I can just imagine what could be done applying bonsai techniques on a tree genetically engineered already for short, stout growth. Only a matter of time until we see them hit the market!

Interesting stuff. Somewhere I had an online exchange a while ago with someone (I think Brent from Evergreen Gardenworks) about the effects of Gibberellic acid and the development of plants.

Interesting fact : Gibberellic acid was discovered by the Japanese in 1935 and was identified as a metabolic byproduct of a plant pathogen which led to very aggressive and tall growing rice plants that died due to falling over because of the excess height.

Apparently a little of this produces excess growth and causes stubborn seeds to germinate. A lot causes the opposite reaction.

I work for a power co. and we and most other utilities spend a lot of money keeping the trees near our wires trimmed, recently I got an email about a product that slows the growth by about 2-3 time if I remember correctly. So it looks like there are already things like this out there now.

Here is a Scary scenario, genetic engineering gone wild, all the trees are affected, need I say more.

Interesting indeed... What Professor Strauss fails to mention is this: due to the significantly reduced ability of his tiny GM trees to process CO2, the 'iceberg' to which he refers is melting in his Diet Sprite as we speak...

Ok so where do you get the stuff that causes the excess growth? Most of my trees could use a good season of excess growth. Really if we could use this stuff instead of planting in the ground for 3-5 years, our sticks-in-pots could become nice bonsai in half that time.

Thing is,...are these effects permanent or does it work more like a fertilizer?
