West=USA in this joke...

Thanks for the lesson. Now exactly what did this have to do with the topic at hand?

BTW, how's that post count coming along?

Let me preface this by saying I don't have any trees in the gallery. I do not have any show quality trees as I have just started bonsai.
If I'm to rate a tree I will rate it on my scale of one to ten. If I feel that a tree deserves a nine I give it a nine. I hope that others will do the same thing.
I understand that my nine and Walter Pall's, or BonsaiAl's, or Treebay's are all different numbers. I think this is what makes the system a good one. In this way we can see how appealling a composition is to "The masses".
I think that the intention of a rating system such as this is not the same as competing at a show.
If people are honest (which in my opinion could be a problem no matter how structured the system might become) then you can get a general consensus how people feel about it as art (or craft).
In my opinion comments on trees in the gallery are more helpfull than the rating system could ever be but the ratings, used honestly(without worrying about hurting feelings), are already the best they can be.

Discomfited,
JP

Thanks for the coment, JP.

This whole discussion reminds me of the comment, by Winston Churchill, I think, to the effect that Democracy is sure a terrible system, its only virtue being that every other system is even worse.

I'll leave you now to return to my normal state of world-weary cynicism.

Let me guess, none. I guess that's why I never care about movie critics' opinions. Anybody who can occupy a seat can critique a movie. Bonsai deserves more than that!!!

Like the old football coach said, "Don't complain about the score if you ain't leavin' it all on the field".

Here's a little aside; do you know who Tony Scott is? He is a movie director who has quite a few films to his credit (Top Gun stands out). He is married to a High School classmate of mine, Donna Wilson (a former Miss NC). I met him at our 20th class reunion about this same time last year. Small world, huh?

Warmest regards,

John

A little extra aside:,and not that I am a fan.The Orlando Bloom is said to be lurking in our local shooting scences for a film Tom Cruise is said to be the director. If I see the top gun star I will drop the names while getting an autograph.

Orn,

If you do, be careful about Donna. I'm not sure what their "relationship" was, but she had a small part in 'Days of Thunder' with him (she is "Buck's"? girlfriend in the movie. You see her in the trailer, just before the "stop" by the Highway Patrol, and a couple of other scenes. She's wearing a cowboy hat, which I NEVER saw her wear in school).
Tony Scott was a really nice guy. He is very down-to-earth and didn't have that "I'm superior" attitude. His young boys were playing with my son outside and I was a little concerned that Casey (my son) would start rough-housing a little too much. Tony didn't seem to care, and let boys be boys. He gave me a very favorable impression during the small amount of time I spent with him and his family. It's nice to see something positive from Hollywood.

Take care (and good luck with the name dropping),

John
