bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Does anyone even really look at the ratings? I stopped looking at them after about 2 days of looking through them when I realized they were all 4/5 or 5/5 (now 8/10 and 10/10). Everything can't be above average or near perfect.

However, I have a warped view of boards, I think. The ratings aren't that important to me. All I want to do is read the posts. Ratings, post counts, titles, avatars, signatures, karma ratings, etc, all go unread by me for the most part.

It would be nice if there were some sort of standard for rating, but it's not really necessary, and it's probably fairly hard to implement it and have it work the way it was meant to.

As mean as it sounds, a set scale without known quality people doing the rating means nothing. Put up the scale, and if I give a tree an 8, who cares? I have no qualifications and don't know wtf I'm really doing yet. I'm just happy my trees are still alive. Multiply me by a few hundred people like me and even with a set scale, the rating is meaningless.

Maybe there should be another section that's similar to Walter Pall's section. Get a group of regular posters who know what they are talking about (Treebay, Carl, bonsaial, etc) and just let them rate the trees. At least then everything would be relative and on the same scale, and you would get some good accompanying posts that explain why the rating was given.

I'd probably still just read what they posted instead of what numerical rating they gave a tree, though.

Hmmm,

In the real world of work, it is the teachers and professors who put in the hard work making sure the rest of the world knew enough to earn a living, not to mention being able to do the necessary math to tell if there is a profit.

Who is qualified to judge a simple friendly forum gallery? The members of the gallery of course. There are threads and contests here that are set up for professional judging and there are local, state and national shows also. One could have their bonsai judged anytime they want by very qualified people, why do we need to change our gallery?

it is what it is. A gallery set up for casual obversations by casual passerbys. A place where you can post your bonsai, be they first attempts or masterpieces. A place where you can show yours and see theirs without wondering if it will be shot to hell and laughed at.

A friendly place, no pressures no worrys, peace. I think I'll go there now.

Thanks,

Will

Ahhh.... the wonderful "world of work where people are held accountable for making a profit"......gave us such dignataries as Jeffrey Skilling, Ken Lay, Bernhard Ebers, Michael Milken and the most dastardly of all.....Martha. What the heck does work have to do with the BonsaiTalk forum or assigning some spurious rating number to a picture of a tree?

Fred, if am not mistaken you are one of the biggest contributors for "such earth shaking issues as whether or not Bonsai is cruel to trees"

If you desire your trees to be judged - "If you want to shoot – shoot don't talk…" – upload trees don't make preconditions for them…

And, Ron, really, it's nothing personal. It's just that frequently what you have to say just doesn't make alot of sense to me and it frustrates me. I guess you feel that you have responded to my point. I continue to feel frustrated that you have not responded to it at all. Or even understood it.

But, what the hey. As you so often remind us, these fine points that I labor over don't really seem so important after a few beers between friends.

Best wishes, Fred

Well at least this moron tries to answer the question. That has to count for something

Reading some of these posts solidifies why I like to see people post pictures in their own galleries. Especially when they like to critique others.

I hope everyone is doing well,

John

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the fun thread (fun to read, that is). Passions are running rampant here.

I decided to stop giving ratings. It doesn't mean much, anyway. Too vague.
Instead, I prefer to write a few words about my impression of the tree in question. When I do that, it leaves no question about how I feel and what I mean.

P.S: I can't help but recall the movie "Anger Management". You and Ron in the airplane scene: Sir, calm down!

In another, unrelated scene, I can also see you as Don Quijote charging in full gear against some windmills (hope you don't mind me having a little fun).

Best regards,
Attila

Hi John

Ever seen a movie directed or produced by any of the famous movie critics, like Robert Ebert, Rex Reed, Gene Shalit, Leonard Maltin, or that lady in the big hat?

Jeopardy! Topic: Movies Featuring Roger Ebert. No fair looking.

Regards,

Matt
