Hi,
Quick question: I recently jinned a juniper prostrata squamata, and then used lime-sulphur on the jinns. I've just comes outside now and found a brownish-blackish mould or fungus appearing on the jinns. What could this be, and how would you suggest I fix this? Do I need to apply more lime-sulphur? *will post photo later, if required* cheers, Shane

Shane--greetings, peace, and grace-- No photo necessary for me. I recently styled a spruce and a very similar if not the same thing happened on a large jin I produced. (During a period of consistently cool, damp weather....hmmmm.) I've liberally re-applied the lime sulphur, and it seems to have been held in check since, but I'm consternated about the thing and perhaps a bit carked, too. [Are the etymology police out? Bring it on, boys! Heh-heh.] I'm thinking I'll have to carve out the affected areas, but am waiting for warmer weather and to see what happens in the meantime. Interestingly, this same tree was attacked by a rather large number of giant conifer aphids as well--the first time I've ever had to wrestle with these particular beasties. (The aphids came after the fungus and second lime sulphur application, for what it's worth.) I am beginning to wonder if this tree is Hindu and still paying for some particularly unpleasant stuff from a previous life...doomed to have me styling it with cutters and wire, infected with some sort of fungus on the amputations I've inflicted, and then assaulted by scores of insipid little sap-sucking insects. Will there be no end to the insults? I've not yet had time to research just what the fungus we're fighting is (but I'm reasonably sure it's a fungus) and what we're actually supposed to do about it, but am watching it closely to see where things go next. Buena suerte! Cato
