Air Layering photos

Dear all:
This afternoon I decided to air layer a Bougainvillea 05.

This tree has an area where the bark is gone from the soil up to near the first branch.

So the following pictures tells it all.

This is how I do most of my air layers using a deli container.

I removed one branch and cut away the wood making sure there was no cambium layer left.

I cut out the center of a deli container slit it so that I could fit it around the trunk. I used clear shipping tape to hold the container tight against the trunk, and wrapped a few layers of the tape under neath the container. Of course, I made sure the top cut was nice and clean, I wet the surface of the cut and dusted Hormone powder with a brush.

I finish off the air layer by using a knife and making several holes and threading wire through and twisting them around a branch.

This is just a precaution in case the weight of the pot and Bonsai soil is too heavy. I did not place any protection on the branches where the wire is placed, but I will do that tomorrow... I was getting tired and a little too hot for this old man!

I have no idea why my air-layer photos ended up on this Fukien Tea site, and I apologize... I guess I was more tired than I thought, when I tried to go to a New Posting!!!!

do you use 100% grit in your mix?? or is there some organic hidden??Anyway, you might want to wrap some aluminium foil around the pot to prevent algae formation

D3rutat:
Those light brown particles are Pine Bark...

I have never had any mold or anything else form on the deli pots.

I do not put an air layer in full sun. Mostly open shade....

In the past I have put aluminum foil n the air layer, if the sun happens to be in the position to shine directly on the air layer, but that only happens a short period of time during the year.
