Fruit development question

Hi again,

I have a Japanese quince and a japanese fuji contorted cherry bonsai that both seem to be flowering quite nicely, but then I do not see any development of fruit.

A person I know suggested that both of these species only flower and do not produce fruit. It seemed a bit strange to me but possible. Any ideas on this? I also realize that you want to limit the amount of fruit because of the drain in energy.

By the way these are both fairly young, so perhaps that explains the above situation or does the soil need to be made more acid etc.?

Thanks for the responses......

I have had fruit on Japanese Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles) on several occasions. The fruit itself is not very impressive. Make sure your flowers are able to be fertilized by the assorted flying insects...outside, etc. You could try pollinating by hand as well.

I had flowers on one of my Chinese quinces (Pseudocydonia sinensis) last year, but no fruit. :-(

I was told (and I am most deliberately not naming names here) about the studied placement of fruit on a Chinese Quince before a particular Japanese exposition. The process involves a philips screwdriver... and I am not saying anything more.

Regards,

Matt

Sure...it is commonly acknowledged that quince fruit may be saved in the fridge in anticipation of a major show and then stuck back on at show time...ya gotta do whatcha gotta do! ;-)
