Rockm, how do the full size trees in your area deal with lows in the low 20s once they are leafed out. According to the nws website, Fairfax is supposed to get to 21 one night! It seems like that would freeze the new leaves right off the full size trees let alone bonsai. I can see them tolerating 30-32, but 21?

The forecast lows are all over the place. I've sen 30, 27, 21, etc. There's no way to tell really. I suspect it's not going to get to 21, except in some localities.

Full sized trees respond to freezing by losing some leaves--primarily on upper branches that are exposed to open air and the coldest temperatures. Leaf damage can show up days later as blackened or burned. In healthy full sized, in-ground trees, this isn't a problem as they have the reserves to regenrate the damaged or lost leaves. In bonsai, however, given their limited resources, and with newly emerging foiliage, it can weaken them significantly. If the freeze is deep enough, it can freeze and kill roots.

The weather in this part of the country is a bit confusing. Somewhat to the north of you but close to the bay, our area is predicted to get down to 31 on Saturday night. I'm not entirely sure if I should worry about that, but I may put at least some of my trees up on the back porch next to the house for a night or two. I have repotted a few of them recently and just got a new group of European beeches in the mail which I've temporarily potted (they're going to be used in a forest planting workshop later in the month). I don't suppose that temperature will cause too much trouble, but I'd rather not take chances . . . and the weatherfolks could be wrong!
