Forum Star Ratings (Who Rates These Things?)

Alright, I really want to know who is rating the threads on bonsaiTALK. Sure, it doesn't matter for beans, but I'm just getting so darn curious that I've just to go figure this out.

A few recent examples:

In the "General" forums: BonsaiJim writes one of the most interesting, thought-provoking, and intellegent posts on here in a long time to kick off the In Pursuit Of A New "school" thread. It gets one star. BonsaiAl starts a great discussion on Japanese versus Chinese stylings; one star. (Until I complained about it )

And don't even get me started on what is going on over in the "Show and Tell" forum. We've a got a dozen great threads in which someone posts a tree asking for suggestions, and gets lots of comments, virtuals, great discussion, and so forth. Most of these were rated one star until I came through and gave 'em fives. Now they're two stars. Meanwhile we've got threads with pictures of twigs in pots and no responses of any sort that are rated five stars. Go figure.

Who is rating these things, anyway? And based on what logic? I really wanna know. Is it just some sort of perverse anonymous sniping? What's going on here?

So here's my challenge. Next time you trash a thread with a one-star rating, do it publicly. Post a short post to the thread saying "I rated this a one, because...." Same thing if you mark a less-than-obvious thread up to a five.

Baffled,
Old Mister

After all of the controversy I started last week, I'm going to be careful with this one. (NOT!)

Obviously I haven't rated any of them, because if I would have - my little twig in a pot would have gotten at least one star. If for nothing more than me having enough guts to show my first little tree - even if it IS still a twig after two years.

This might sound kind of apathetic, but what does it really matter anyway? The powers that be, might have a twist in their knickers one particular day and rate something differently than they would at any other given time. I agree that there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

How many STARS will this thread get

hehehe... Well, I don't even look at the stars, but I believe, that if somebody is going to give an specific amount of stars, should at least, read all the posts... because I'm sure that the stars are proportional to the number of pics and not, proportional to the amount of information... So, it is not being fair, or realistic...

So, where am I going? I don't know, then I will give this thread no stars

Where do I select how many stars will I give it, Oh, I can't find, it... well OMC you were luck... this time hehehe...

Dear Old Mr. Crow,
I gave that In Pursuit Of A New "school" thread a ONE and i voted on it twice, mainly cause of that stupid baffoon mfp1028 just running on about this and that. I can't stand people that run on and on and on and on top of it the idiot didn' t make any sense. Is this guy even moderately intelligent? Comparing cars to trees? it made very little sense to me. Did i mention i hate it when people run on and on? That mfp, i bet he is just as obnoxious in person, good thing he lives on the east coast cause if he lived on the west coast i would personally drive him to the center of the biggest desert i could find, tie him up to the biggest spiniest cactus i could find and let the vultures have at him. Thats the only time i vote on threads is when that phycopath posts something, i' m glad you started this thread just so i could get this off my chest, i had a feeling i couldn't start a thread entitled "mfp1028 is a baffoon" and get it past the "guards." That Matt is one tough cookie.
Im done
mfp get a life

bye bye

I gave this thread four stars because, while it was relevant and engaging, it didn't have a poll or a picture of a twig in a pot.

I will see about adding a poll, if such a thing can be done.

UPDATE: SUCCESS!

Okay I can see the next topic:

Who votes in these darn polls?

Crow, When I first read your post I thought for sure it must be that bunch from IBC but it looks like everyone has fessed up.

I haven't paid much attention to the stars one way or another. I read most things that are posted here and stars or the lack there of isn't going to sway me to read a certain post.

An easy fix would be to have a clickable icon showing the user name and how they rated the thread.

We can give Mike two user names, for those times when he wants to debate himself.

OMC, You were looking for a tree by MFP1028. While searching some past articles, I came across this beauty. This was done in early hippie days, when branch ramification was king. Just look at the tertiary branching on the rounded crown. This tree is done in the ancient Chinese "Bong" style.

I do not rate posts, because how do I know how good they are? I am only a few months into bonsai, and I learn something from every post. I mean, from the person who has been in bonsai for years, to the person who is posting a question on how to start bonsai. They are all beneficial to me, so they are all great. I can only rate this site, and out of 5 stars it gets 10.

scary repot

I wish you wouldn't have brought up that tree Bonsaial. It is no longer in that pot, and during the repot last fall i had an... experience. What can i say? either the tree is a genius or a thief. The latter would explain why i always feel like a moron.
