Thumbs up

Hi all,
My name is Steve and I've been into bonsai for about 2 1/2 years now but seriously for about the last 1 1/2. I'm 24 and married living in New York (Schenectady). My ever growing collection consists of about 24 bonsai & 3 potentsai (that # will be getting bigger). I really have too many to list but here goes anyway:

Bonsai: 4 azalea (satsuki)
1 chinese elm (my first)
2 fukien tea
4 juniper nana
3 shimpaku juniper
1 thousand star serissa
1 pink serissa
1 kingsville dwarf boxwood
1 cotoneaster
1 brush cherry
2 trident maples
1 korean hornbeam
1 olive (bucinda spinosa)
1 ficus "too little"

Potentsai: 1 varieagated pink serissa
1 kyoto serissa
1 bougainvillea

Sometimes I think I have too many but what's too many really? I definately consider myself a beginner but I feel like the only way to learn is to jump right in. It is something that like you all I really enjoy. I am definately partial to mame but can appreciate all shapes and sizes. I look forward to learning new things from all of you, it's cool to get different opinions and knowledge from such a diverse group of people who all share a common interest. Once I get a digital camera and learn how to post pictures (I'm a bigger novice when it comes to computers) I will be posting pictures for feedback. Looking forward to future correspondance with you all. -sw

Hey to all -

I'm a 23yr old male - yea I was not drug here thanks, that has been interested in Bonsai's in general for about 5 to 7 years now. I started early with a love for plants and things along those nature due to just having a plant happy mom or something - eh. Anyway - I ended up being able to grow things better than her, much to her frustration heh, and have tried to stay true to my 'roots' ever since. While I shucked my rose gardens [for now], my african violets, marble queen, random easter lilys and many other plants - I kept the 'growing' love - and found a stylistic love in the designing of Bonsai's quite appealing. Going from a want to be comic artist at a young age to now a start up Art Director - as my design style matured - the concept of growing a plant into the shape and feel - the design - I want has been a maddeningly sensible thing for me. Drawn to Bonsai sold at random locations for years I've picked up quite a few - and always made bad decisions hah. Once it was buying 2 - one for myself and my old best friend to put on our 'new desks' at a very piss poor start up localily - left outside over the weekend they were destroyed by bunnies that lived in the backyard in cages of the startup. Dont' ask.

Years passed, I begin to date a girl, went to Seattle with her - bought a lovely Serissa at the warnings of "don't buy this" from the Bonsai garden owner - and then promptly made the mistake of listening to her dad about "oh yea - in Seattle the car's never heat up - just leave it in the car while we shop..."

Nix one lovely lovely serissa.

Not to give up, I bought another 2 Bonsai's after returning home, one for me and one for the gf, and tried to get those to go a bit better. Well she let her's die - sometime after we broke up heh, but years later my little tree is still kicking.

Of course. I did buy one more - beatiful blue spruce specimen about 6 months ago. Put it in our office. Left it with our president to care for while I went on a trip. And came back to a dead tree But hey - now I know not to trust him with watering hah.

--

I have only my one Juniper currently, perched on my window seal as I type actually, and am looking to collect many more. Now having a good start up company - in a office and downtown vs a house with rabbits right outside downtown haha - I want to go ahead and decorate with more and more bonsai's. That in mind, and knowing I'll probably need more help with understanding the dynamics and variables in growing indoors in a office enviorment - and not wanting to have ONLY Junipers all my life heh - I happy join this forum. I'll be spuratic some months - but overall, I look forward to long term membership - I won't be burning out on my pottree's here - and hopefully the forum won't be going anywhere either

New here

Hello

I have jut registerd on this forum.
My name is Michèle. I've had bonsai for approximatively 3-4 years now, but I am not making a very good job.
All my bonsai until now were Ulmus Parviflora's...

The first one went through hell of felling of windowsill, then too much watering at first, then not enough.
After that I bought two new ones (at two months interval). I placed them in a bad spot in my appartment (not enough light) and they both caught diseases (and little pests). In an attempt to cure them I think I actually made it worse...
The bonsai I curently have is also not in a good shape (see also my post in the "Dying Bonsai" forum).

Well, that's my bonsai story up to now.
By joining this forum I hope to get more kwnoledge and feeling of what it is to take care of bonsai, and also to meet fellow bonsai-minded people...

Greetz to all

Well after lurking about for some time, I think formal introductions are in order. My name is Cody Oliver. I am from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, which happens to be zone 3, we have an average 120 frost-free days a year. This is my first year attempting bonsai, my first year trying to grow anything really. At present I have two bonsai. A nine year old shohin Japanese Red Maple (Deshojo) and a five year old Satsuki Azalea, a mame, both purchased recently (and both fairly unsuitable for Calgary’s unpredictable and sometimes quite harsh winter). I also have a number of nursery plants that I haven’t begun any real styling on yet, these include a few more Azaleas, a Japanese Boxwood, a Cotoneaster, A Hinoki Cypress, a Juniper and a Spruce.

I’m quite interested in growing some trees from seed and saplings, because I like the idea of developing something from (almost) scratch. I have plans to start some Pomegranate seeds, and have some Chinese Elm cuttings on the way (from my local bonsai dealer).

Thanks to everyone who posts here, I’ve learned a lot already.

Cody

Hi I'm really new to Bonsai. I just bought my husband one 2 weeks ago (so far I'm doing all the work). Don't think any less of me I rescued a juniper from Target but I'm really interested in branching out (haha) to real trees. Has anyone tried a mesquite tree? I live in north texas and that's all I see when I look out my window so it was a passing thought. It'll be fun getting to know you all!

Well I'm Larry, I live in north east england where it is constantly threatening rain at the moment!
I am unemployed, love growing anything green and adore trees. Bonsai was a natural progression for me I suppose! That started in 1986 with a college course in pottery in which I made some of my own pots.
I had a nice english elm literati which died on me after 12 years.
Never yet bought either a bonsai or a pot!
I have a few unusual houseplants on the go including a mad peanut, a piece of ginger root and some orange pip seedlings.
Favourite tree is probably a beech or a silver birch.
Would love a job in a horticultural nursery.
Currently living with one girlfriend,2 cats and a good selection of houseplants.
Not to mention a few bonsai on the go!
Love reading sci-fi and wildlife/science books.
Hate hunting/animal exploitation.
Pagan.

Hello everyone!!! My name is Fern, if you didn't already guess that from my user name. I live in beautiful southern California, where it is sunny like 300 days out of the year. I am 22 years old and about to start law school and get married, all within two weeks of eachother! I take care of my bonsai to relax and get my mind off things. I was wondering, am I the only one who dreams about wiring my trees, or are there other nut jobs out there in bonsai-land like me?!

Fern.

p.s. ozzerbon, if you find out anything about the pepper tree let me know, I love those trees! I have been eyeing a few branches of my grandmother's tree for propagation!!!
