Hello all.
Mike here.
I'm 39, almost 1/2 way to 80!
Live in middle TN. (no, we're not all rednecks!)
My wife thinks I'm obsessed with bonsai and I guess I am.
I'm a sales rep, and gone for days at a time, so watering my trees can be a bit of a challenge. Will attempt some sort of automatic watering system this spring.
Only been doing bonsai for 2 years, seriously for 1 year. Learning more and more each day. I find this forum to be loaded with valuable information, so much so that it has been a bad influence on my work habits. While at home taking "office days" I find myself browsing here more than working. I've checked out some other forums but this one has no rival in my opinion. Matt has done quite a job. The people are very knowledgable and the "cast of characters" are great.
I haven't posted much, as I feel a bit inferior in terms of horticultural know how, but I'm slowly becoming more comfortable.
In bonsai pots I have a Juniper (nana), Trident Maple, Chinese Elm, Fukien Tea, and an ailing Brush Cherry. In training are 4 Japanese Maples, 3 Azaleas, 2 Bouganvilleas, Kingsville Boxwood and a few other various Junipers.
I'm hoping Santa brings me a digital camera for Christmas because I've got several projects I need opinions on.
Thank you all. I've learned more here than all my books combined!

Mike

ps. OMC, you crack me up!

My name is David Jones, and I live in South Central PA.
I am 32yrs old, and have been into bonsai for 4-5yrs. I have been trying to grow/train/style/properly prune/eg, keep alive my small bonsai collection. I like the Pa cold but my potted trees don't .
I only have one tree that I would say is 100%, which is a mugo pine that took very well to it's "first" styling, and ramification.
All the others are still major works in the process.
I have 15 outside specimens (blackpine, boxwood, maples, mugo's,junipers), all of varying styles. I also have 2 very promising ficus on the window sill inside, and 1 boxwood that I purchased too late in the season in my opinion to put outside. The kingsville is doing well so far
(lots of misting on a cold sill, and finger crossing: )...
I have read my share of bonsai books + magazines, but I am still, and always will be looking for knowledge. I am really ready for this coming spring. I have many projects in mind.
My major project this spring, will be a forest planting on a slab (species yet unknown). I also am ready to explore all the green house's, and nurseries, too find the good stuff before its all been picked threw this spring. Oh yes, and my spelling really stinks too.
Any help from the knowledgable will be highly appreciated as golden. Hope we all can help one another....

Hi all,

I'm René Voortwist, age 37, married two kids. I live in Veghel the Netherlands. I do bonsai for almost two years now and are totaly hooked. It all started with a little oak seedling I found in the front garden. (maybe should have left it there.......) It's become so bad that it has totaly replaced my other big hobby : ham radio. I don't know how many plants I have in my backyards but there are too many. (or at least that's what my daughters keep telling me :->) Species include juniper, yew, hawthorn, chamacyparis, ceder, boxwood, and metasequioa. I think Bonsai is totaly fantastic. Two years ago I didn't know the difference between a pine and a spruce (have lived in the center of a big city until I was 21) and now I know at least three sorts of pines by their latin name... I'm suddenly noticing the season go by. (didn't care before two years execpt that it was cold in the winter.....) This forum is a great source of information and I try to visit it every day.
If someone would have told me two years ago that I would be sticking virtual branches on virtual trees on my computer I would have declared them insane. It's funny how a person can change...

regards, René

Thumbs up

Hello folks,

Where do I find this proagation folder that you are referring to, or am I so dim-witted, and am missing some point or two?

As a matter of interest, is there anyone out there that has the seeds of SCHINUS MOLLE [pepper tree]?

Hi All,
By way of introduction, my name is Jonathan Emmick and I purchased my first tree 13 years ago but have been an avid bonsai enthusiast probably the last 5 years. I am a member of both the Great Lakes bonsai society and the Buffalo Bonsai Society. I really recommend a local club !!! My favorite tree is the one I am working on at the moment. However, I have a passion for working on native species such as larch, Eastern white cedar, juniper, apple, honeysuckle, spruce, pitch pine etc. I thourghly enjoy the internet interaction but think it only part of the learning experience as it pertains to bonsai. Pictures only show things in a two dimensional way. This introduction idea was great as it allows us to get to know each other a little better.
Regards ,
Jonathan

Happy New Year to All,

My name is Lesley. I'm married and have two teenage kids. I'm new to the addiction of bonsai collecting / creating, just started last June. I now have 40 plants in various stages. I really like working and learning about trees, didn't know I would. I belong to a local club which is great and I also love this website. I have learned so much on it and try to log on frequently. I'm a great reader too and have been reading volumes of books and articles on bonsai. People on this site are very helpful and I think that these introductions are a wonderful idea. I love to look at the galleries. Just like a few of you, I find myself looking at trees in nature like never before. My kids make fun of me when I slow down in the car so I can look at the really beautiful ones. I too long for a digital camera, but will wait til I'm sure this love affair doesn't die. I don't think it will! (I just found a 1976 Sunset Garden Bonsai Book in a box of old books that was in my garage-Maybe the seed of interest was laying dormant to sprout in 2002, that's a long stratification period!)
Good potting to all ...

P.S. I got the camera but still haven't mastered it and I now have over 100 trees in various stages of development. I still love BonsaiTALK and I'm definately in this for the longterm or however long the supreme being decides I can do it! Later

Hi, another newbie here. I am 30 years old and began learning about bonsai 2 years ago. (spring 2001)

I do not have anything I would consider bonsai yet, but do have several promising potensai aswell as many seedlings and cuttings.

Some of my favorite trees I'm working with are Acer palmatum, Larix decidua, Ulmus hollandica 'Jacqueline Hillier', Chaenomeles speciosa 'Texas Scarlet', and many Azaleas.

I am also experimenting with several native species including, Pseudotsuga menzeisii, Tsuga heterophylla, Pinus contorta, Pinus monticola, Acer circinatum and Alnus rubra.

I have been lurking the forums for a few weeks and posted a couple times. Looks like a great bunch of people here. A good mix of novices and experts.
I'm looking forward to posting more in the future.
