Hello all greetings from Alaska,
I found this forum a few weeks ago and have spent many hours going through the bounty that has been laid before me. Thank you all of you for contributing to this site. It seems to have brought the world together to worship this amazing lifestyle. I have been into bonsai for about 15 years and up until a few years ago I have kept ( and killed ) many trees from the east coast to the west coast. I lost my latest collection due to a divorce. I moved into a bus and have spent the last 4 years dealing with a very inconsistent bonsai habitat. After many froze to death I started making wire trees. These will not die and can survive minus zero degree temps. I have been selling my trees in galleries throughout the state and I was afraid to show you folks until I felt comfortable. I have posted several in my gallery and I have appreciated the views and all the comments that went with them. My work is an interpretation of trees and should not be taken literally, although they still provide me and others with the same sense of serenity that I used to get from the real deal. So I have been living vicariously through you folks that have been kind enough to post their journals as well as the immense photo galleries presented within. My hats off to all of you that have contributed. I could go on and on with the praises for the contributors and the masters that grace these pages but I will save my breath. So to all, thanks again and keep up the great work!!! steve panarelli ps forget the photo of myself, imagine grizzly adams in a 72 GMC bus |

Hi, Elizabeth,
Welcome to the forum! Chamaecyparis obtusa is the scientific name for Hinoki cypress, which is one of the classic species for bonsai. Try a Google search on "Hinoki cypress" and you should get plenty of info.

Hi to everyone, I started out last year after getting my 1st tree a Chinese Elm, then went & got a bigger one, I also have a little maple which cost next to nothing as it didn't look to good/well but has started to go like mad. My wife then went & bought a Gray Bark Elm as I think she was feeling left out lol. We have 2 childern & more pets than you could shake a forest at let alown a stick lol. Our hobbies are keeping & breading tropical fish, our Koi & our Lovebirds. We are also into 4x4's & off road driving.
I am looking forward to chatting to yous & sorry about my spelling All the best Neil |

Hi, I am a new member to this forum. My girlfriend bought me a new bonsai maple over the weekend and I am very excited about it. I had a bonsai juniper when I was in High School I had it for 5 years and then went off to college and my parents dident keep it watered and it died. I'm looking to learn more about the care of the Maple. Other than bonsai I am a professional photographer and work for various newspapers and magazines.

Hello Everyone!
I myself just got into the art or bonsai about a month ago. I have been reading/browsing the forum for a few weeks now, but thought I'd finally introduce myself. I have always been curious, but never delved in. Lucky for me, when I started to seriously look up information I was lucky enough to discover that the International Bonsai Arboretum is five minutes from where I work and that introductory classes started the next week. A month later I have had some great classes (taught by Bill Valavanis. if you live anywhere near Rochester, NY, look into the fall class,) joined the Bonsai Society in the area, and even got to see Suthin Sukosolvisit do a presentation. I am definitely hooked as I already have 9 trees started up (1 trident maple, 1 japanese maple, 2 azaleas, 2 boxwoods, 2 junipers, and 1 ficus.) I figure I will learn a lot when I eventually kill off most of them in the next year...hehe. Well, see you all around the forums! P.S. if anyone out there is involved with Odyssey of the Mind, that's my other passion. Should you be at world finals in a month, stop by the problem 5 sites (not sure which division I'm doing) and look for Khaki Man. |
