bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Re: Forum Member Introductions

Been doing bonsai since the '60's and loving it. We're neighbors, I'm in Aloha, just down the street. The Bonsai Soceity of Portland meets every fourth Tuesday of the month in nearby Portland. Right at the Goose Hollow station on the MAX. Get those ficus inside for the winter.

Re: Forum Member Introductions

Hey all,

I got interested in bonsai in the spring of this year. So far I really enjoy it. All of mine are very small.......I think I need to get to a nursery for a few larger ones. I have the following pre-bonsai's

Japanese Barberry
Amur Maple
Silver Maple
Juniper
Cottonwood
Green Ash
Oak
Mimosa
Upsidedown tree (can't think of the real name at the moment)
Catalpa

I don't know if all of these will make good bonsai but I figure some will be good to experiment with.

btw....is there a seed or tree exchange here like on gardenweb?

thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Sounds like you have some nice material there to work with. We don't have a formal seed exchange, but you're welcome to start one, maybe in the classifieds or propagation folder.

If it's just a swap basis, I have no problem with it in the Propagation folder below. I think that's the best place.

That upside down tree sounds interesting. Are you sure you planted the seeds rightside up?

Re: Forum Member Introductions

Hey Matt,

The Upsidedown tree is a Baobab (Adansonia digitata). Found in Africa and a few other places. Its a very cool tree. I have a couple of pics. The trunks can get to 30ft in diameter. Perfect bonsai shape. They are also very easy to germinate.

So if I want to start a seed exchange do I just start a new thread in the Propagation folder? And if I do will you spread the word?

Thanks,

Brian

Re: Forum Member Introductions

Yes. Just start a SEED EXCHANGE PROGRAM thread in the Propagation folder. Then we'll post a message on the general board letting folks know its there.

I'll also make it a sticky thread so it will stay at the top of the propagation folder.

Thanks for the info about the Baobob!

Regards,

Matt

Hey all.
Another rookie here (hence the user name).
My dubdubdub time is usually spent at intheguard.com (martial art site) but we're currently experiencing some technical difficulties. I hope to poke around here a bit.

Props to the moderator(s) here, super responsive, helpful & informative. Looks like a great forum with a ton of knowledge, I can learn a lot from you cats. I'll have a few Qs and hope I can contribute.

I'm in SoCal and have the basic novice quiver of tree stock. A couple junipers, couple maples, throw in a ficus and a shrub or 2, all of which could be considered "plants in containers" at best, but I'll get there.
Thanx & Cya

Hi Mr. K,

Welcome to the forum. I'm new here, too. I'm Andy, live in Texas and work mostly with Japanese black pine and Chinese elm.

As for your trees, you will find that you will not be able to grow the Picea and Zelkova indoors for long. Stay away from junipers and maples too. The rest should do okay indoors, but in Spring, Summer and Fall will do far better outdoors.

A nice thread. It's good to get to know a bit about everyone here.

Kind regards,

Re: Forum Member Introductions

Hi folks:

Just started in the hobby and have several prebonsai in process. After 32 years in the aircraft industry it was time to retire and do something that didn't bash your brains in every day. Bonsai looks like just the thing. At any rate I am doing a lot of reading and prcticing on some herbs that grow fast and point out the mistakes in a hurry. At 60 I can't wait for a black pine to grow up.
Hope to read all your posts on many of the subjects.
