Forum Member Introductions

Well, some of you may know each other, but I am new here, so I thought I would do an introduction as I am very nosey (and it said anything can be posted here so... ). We'll start with the basics.
Name: Kirstopher B. Zitzewitz
Age: 19
Location : Hillsboro, Oregon
Turn Ons: My Wife ... Errr wait, wrong type of forum....
Current Trees:
None Really in the Bonsai stage, most will be in training for another year.
Species I have,
Picea Abies
Zelkova Serrata
Ficus Benjimina
Ficus Neriifolia
Serria Foetida
Mini Crape Myrtle
And some other kind, I cannot remember name of, I think its Berberis
I have been practicing alot with ficus as they are the most readilly available plant here fopr indoor as my outdoor space is way limited to not much and nothing at all, I would die to have a fukien tea or pomegranite. I do not have much practice with junipoers, but have tried a few maples that have all died, lost about 13 ficus just to testing different technicues (casecades and layerings etc) but hay, at 3 dollars for a 3 foot group of ficus, no problem.
I started bonsai to get out of EQ (had to stop spending money and get a life, still spending money, and still have no life though =P), always loved plants, and thought I might make it a hobby. If anyone knows Kutulu Valkyriur from any EQ forums, I am sorry, I am just as nosey and have an opinion about everything still. So anyway, just a rundown, what other kind of people we got here?

Re: Introduction

I got no problem with nozy. Ripsgreentree here in fresno california. I was ninteen when I married but that was thirtyfour years ago. Thats lots of water. I love bonsai and work on all kinds of different trees. I live in an apartment with a small back yard that is filled with trees. Hundreds of them. Oregon is maple country, if you are loosing maples You might want to look at your soil mixtures. Oh yes! maples are outside only. It is difficult to keep bonsai indoors. If you check in to this forum often you will find all kinds of information about bonsai from all around the world. Lodes and lodes of information. Some fair nice people also. Will be looking for your posts as I go along.

Re: Forum Member Introductions

I am brand new to Bonsai as well. I have been interested for a while. I train/teach japanese martial arts and this seemed to be a great way to express some creativity. Kosho - Old Pine Tree. It is the name of the martial art I train in and seemed to be a great ID for Bonsai as well.

The stats:
Bob
Philly, PA
Bonsai experience: none
Other hobbies: Martial arts, triathlons

EQ is known as Everquest, a massive Multiplayer online game, it has about 30 servers each hoolding about 1500 or more (3400) people at most any given time playing a game, kinda like dungeons and dragons, a role playing game, if you ever go to the eq.ss.stratics.com you can goto the monk, warraior, shaman, rogue, shadowknight and ragner forums and see alot of my other usless blather (mostly on the monk one though.
My Maple Trees poofed for different reasons, one was yamadori from hte front yard that I thought had two trunks, well I was wrong, At the very base they came together and I tried spliting them, making them two, and they died, the other I got but I went to work for the local plant nursery and got so tired after working each night neglected to water for a few weeks and iot just went plop.
Another plant I was attempting was a poplar, but the thing grew so much for even being chopped in half I decided I would wait, although it had a nice trunk.

Jim

Texas, Zone 9

Been doing bonsai for about 15 years. Basically rebuilding a collection for the third time...

Focus is primarily on collected TX natives/naturalized species:

Bald Cypress (my real passion!)
Cedar Elm
Water Elm
Live Oak
Mexican Olive
Chinese Tallow
Persimmon
Yaupon Holly

But I also have an extensive collection of tropicals and more traditional species like junipers, Black & Red Pine and lately, Trident maples. Sizes range from mame to 6-hands... I actually probably have one of everything!

I teach when someone will listen and am active in the nearest club(s). May start a local one if I ever get the time.

Re: Forum Member Introductions

Jim, have you ever tried texas mountain laural for bonsai? They seem like a fair candidate, the leaves aren't too large and they would probably reduce some in bonsai training. I've got some seeds that i plan to start next spring.

Re: Forum Member Introductions

That's one I haven't played with. I've tried seeds- none sprouted- that someone gave me. I think it's illegal to collect?!?
