forest number two.
Altogether there were four forests and a couple of leftovers which made excellent stand alone bonsai.

best regards

Walter, Inspiring work as usual. I particularly like the pot for the second forest. Where was it made? Thanks. David

Walter

When these forests are 30 years old do you think that this material will all be good individual trees or will crowding cause problems?
Do you think that it is a good idea to start seedlings in forest plantings with the idea that you are increasing the size of the trunks of the trees.

Glenn
P.S. Growing your own material always gives you the best control of size, quality and quantity. It is always good to see your work.

I would settly for one of Walter's trees. Forget forests! LOL

But in reply to you, Jay, I would say do what you want to do. It's really that simple. I have read it is quite common to plant forests and later make them into individual trees. It's also quite common to take beautiful trees (like Walter) and make forests.

Enjoy them both ways.

I have tried groups with decidious trees mainly and have pulled apart groups as well. What I have found is that once I have pulled the group apart the majority of the trees have lost branching on one side of them making them unattractive. To make these branches regrow would take time but I believe they will only ever be used in a group.

Some of my experiences include:
A zelcova group that I pulled apart. I wanted to grow new roots on each tree. So I separated each tree of the nine trees. All will go bakc into the group as none will make a good individual tree in the near future. Maybe 10 years in the ground might help

A trident group I haven't put together yet. I am growing individual trees for a group of tridents. Next year I intend to group the trees together in either groups of 2, 3, 4 or 5. They will be potted in growing boxes for another 1 to 2 years so the trunks and bases will fuse. Then I will put the group together.

Thank you all for continueing this discussion. Walter I recall you posting these 'trees to be a forest' on the IBC sometime back. Am I correct? At the time I was very impressed with their development. Your ability and keen eye are very much appreciated!

It is good to receive many differing thoughts on this subject. I see that almost all our group gets my thought, this is a discussion topic! It is not my desire to grow a forest to produce a single tree, but to hear the thoughts of all on what would/could happen if one tree does get out of prospective with the forest.

Walter has reminded me (us) that forests can be put together with advanced material. We can do as he show us and take some trees which could be developed singularly and place them into a forest. I appreciate the reminder.
