For the auction, the reserve doesn't have anything to do with what you paid. The reserve sets the minimum you would take for the pot. If you want at least 100.00 dollars then you would set the reserve at 100.00. It could go for more, that is gravy. If it never reaches your reserve then you are not obligated to sell it.
For the purposes here, if you set the reserve at 500.00 dollars you may never get a bid, yet that is what the pot is worth. If you have no reserve then I might bid 75.00 bucks. Would you part with it for that? For the most part, that is why you see all the crappy stuff on Ebay. Why would anyone put something good there, and let it go out to bid and take the chance of losing their shorts. Bonsaial

David,
Now I'm confused. Mine (bought used from Johnny Uchida about 7 years ago) has a very similar signature on the bottom, as did the ones at Bonsai Northwest. Maybe these are essentially copies of yours...? If so, they're still very nice copies and I'd love to see the "original." -Carl

I guess I could never part with the pot. Too rare in Australia. It seems that in the US these types are more readily available. Very lucky on your part. In Australia no one is importing pots from Japan anymore. Too expensive to compete against the Korean and other south east asian imports.
Ok then a reserve would be US$150. This is because of the rarity of the pot in Australia. I however didn't pay that much. |

That is why it is hard to sell good stuff on ebay. Most people that are going to part with that much cash want to inspect it. I want to hold it, look for glued on chips, and the possible ding that somebody forgot to fix for the picture. If you get burnt, it is a real hassle to get your money back and it is just not worth it. If you are a big time seller on ebay, you have stuff there that will turn fast and reap you lots of profit with out much overhead. 150.00 pots don't sell that well, course theres a sucker born every minute.

OK since the "Bonsai Art" discussion seems to be slowing down I said that I would tell you what this pot is worth.
A lot of you were pretty close in pricing it. It cost me AUS$150 which is around US$85. This is a bargin in Australia as we don't have access to Japanese pots anymore. Everyone imports the cheaper chinese/korean and other asian nation pots. This was bought in Japan when one of the older club members went over there quite a while ago. I just have to now find a tree big enough to put into it!!!!!!! David |

I am amazed that Japanese pots are not being imported to Australia. it's a damn shame. Here, I can log onto bonsaimonk.com, and order me one up, and have it in a few days.

The market in Australia is no where near as big as it is in the US. It is easier and cheaper to import the cheap stuff. Also you don't have too many people here who know what a quality Japanese pot looks like and is. SO if there is no big demand then how would you move these much more expensive pots? The retailers/wholesalers can then charge a better mark up on their trees and not have to pay for the Japanese pot as well. David |
