A good brushdown, as Al suggests should do the trick. You can brush it as deeply as the surface cambium, which will show a bit green, but don't go beyond that point. The normal bark color will reappear within 6-12 months.

Applying diluted lime sulfur solution to deciduous trees is fine [u:2404a708d5]provided they are not in leaf[/u:2404a708d5]. Yours most certainly appears to be leafy! Lime sulfuring deciduous trees is done pretty frequently on Japan on maples and beech so much so that some become almost white from it. You should use caution not to let it soak into the soil.

The Warren Hill concentration was something like this, applied before bud break: For conifers: One part lime sulfur to 30 parts water. For deciduous trees: One part lime sulfur to 40 parts water.

That probably depends on the concentration of the product you are using to begin with, but the point is, the deciduous trees can withstand a good dose when dormant. I have read an admonition not to use lime sulfur at all on ume (Prunus Mume), Japanese Flowering Apricot, but I don't know the basis for it, could be superstition?
