Is fish poop.... good ..... fertilizer?
I use it. Not a bunch, but at times. I have an old clawfoot bathtub with goldfish and plants and I clean the filter once a month.
The gluck that squeezes out of the filter medium is dark brown and I take what squeezes into the rinse water (must be rinsed in pond water to preserve the bacteria) and pour it into whatever pots are handy. But.....officially..... is it GOOD fertilizer? |

Hi Kazoo,
Personally, I wouldn't go putting the brown sludge on the surface of my trees. After a while you will get a build up of this slurry, and it will harden to form a skin which will eventually interfere with watering, feeding and air exchange. However, if you wanted to, you could simply use the water from your fishtank. The fish waste contains ammonia, which breaks down into nitrites and then further into nitrates (this is done by the friendly bacteria in your filter). Nitrates are one of the components that plants utilise in order to grow. Provided that the levels aren't too high (Your fish would probably be dead anyway if they were), and you don't water the trees all the time with the fishtank juice... there will be no harm in using it. Just be a bit careful if using chemical fertilizers at the same time. All the best, Aaron |
