First tree/prune/virtual...comments?
Posted this below but had problems with my computer's cookies....I'm Robyn aka Ginkgo....
Hello all, I'm new to bonsai. I'm working on my first tree and could use comments/suggestions from those more experienced than myself. I've done much interenet reading, some of the advise contradicts. I will appreciate criticism on my choices. The photos of this tree are located here: http://www.fashionbay.net/bonsai2.html Thanks much, Robyn aka Gingko |

Re: First tree/prune/virtual...comments?
Gingko,
IMHO, I agree with the advice you've gotten. I'd prune the left branches for jin and separate the trees. I don't think you'll find it that hard to do. Just take your time and try not to disturb the roots to much. I would also put the two new trees into larger planting pots or boxes instead of bonsai pots to reduce the stress. You can transplant to bonsai pots after the trees have recovered from the first pruning. |

Re: First tree/prune/virtual...comments?
This is a common error, you have removed all of the foliage from the trunk and limbs leaving your tree way out of preportion. This will now be difficult to correct. If you want a tall tree you need to have a much larger trunk for preportion. I would invest another five dollars and start working from the other end by removing the ends of the limbs and trying to use the foliage that is much closer to the trunk.

Re: First tree/prune/virtual...comments?
Thanks for the advice, I certainly do want to keep trying until I get it right. I do have a question though, I was told to try for a semi-cascade style with this particular plant, rather than an upright informal style. Did I do this wrong? Or should I seek another "advisor"
Thanks again for your comments, Ginkgo |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Re: First tree/prune/virtual...comments?
Ginkgo.. an old saying "you can't have your cake and eat it too", Lose one of the branches and then proceed. Because the tree had two good possibilities for a cascade does not mean you should use them both. Sometimes less is more! You have to many things going on at once. Study the tree as it is now (what is was is of no use at this point), thunk about what will occur if you do this or perhaps that. Then and only then remove the unwanted parts. Just my 2 cents. Jay
