Personally, I don't know what the firethorn looks like. But, I do know that they have thorns.
I don't see any in your pics, do they have any? -Paul |

Don't know what it is, but it doesn't look like a pyracantha to me. At least not like any I have. Pyracantha have flowers in large clusters. Here's a link with a good pic.

G’day Brendan,
At first glance looks like a Pyracantha coccinea, these have singular and very large scarlet berries with few thorns. I have one from Spain. Second possibility is Cotoneaster dammeri, leaves on this are smaller and slightly less rounded, and fruit much smaller as well. My two are from Holland. Shall try to post pics later today. Nigel

G’day Brendan,
Here are some pics of some of my Pyracanthas that have not [as yet] been de-berried by a very hungry and destructful black bird. Pyracantha augustfolia (1) Height, 39cm [15 ¼”]. Round, incurved, cream, glazed, Japanese pot. Diameter, 18.5cm [7 ¼“], height, 7.5cm [3“]. Pyracantha augustfolia (2) Height, 15cm [6“]. Round, pale-grey, glazed, Chinese, stylised ‘Drum’ pot. Width, 13.5cm [5 ¼“], height, 6.5cm [2 ½“]. [THIS ONE I THINK] [the striking berries are much larger that those of the others] Pyracantha coccinea Height, 20cm [8“]. Round, mustard green, matt-glazed pot by Jurgen Hilken, BRD. Width, 13.5 [5 ¼“], height, 10cm [4“]. Pyracantha coccinea - ‘Navajo’ (1) Height, 34.5cm [13 ½“]. Square, flaired, brown, unglazed, Japanese pot. Width, 16cm [6 ¼“], height, 12cm [4 ¾“]. Pyracantha coccinea - ‘Navajo’ (2) Height, 28cm [11“]. Black plastic pot. Could not get to my two Cotoneaster dammeri, which may also be as in your pic Very sorry about the poor colour and clarity of the pics, but it’s the best that I can do at present. All best, Nigel

My first thought was it may be a species of hawthorn. in one book of mine it reffers to american hawthorn, and from the picture it is identical to what you have. But, looking on google i found almost nothing on this plant. So a further look yielded this:
http://www.bonsai4me.com/SpeciesGuide/Crataegus.html The middle of the three species it lists mentions it is sometimes incorrectly sold as coccinea. So, although i don't relly have a clue which plant you have, another possibility is hawthorn. I think. That said, looking at the leaves would make me think it is a cotoneaster. Are the leaves quite soft to the touch? Al

Cotoneaster, for mine. Softer leaves than the Pyracanthas that I have.
