Finding trees
Please do not think that I am being smart.
Buy your first book and start reading. I would suggest getting the Sunset Bonsai book from your local hard ware store. This is very inexpensive and easy to find, it also has a large overview of Bonsai and proper techniques. Cypress and pine are bad cutting material and extreemly dificult airlayering material. I would say to start your collection in a different manor. Glenn

Glenn's advice is quite sound. Your thought of perhaps starting Pine or Cypress from cuttings is not likely to succeed. You might, however, look around for some hardwood seedlings to collect. Your prospects with this material are much brighter and will help you start to develop some understanding of what's involved with keeping trees in pots alive. Even here, however, a little "book larnin" of basics will really help you with your efforts to keep your collected material alive. In general, hardwoods are easier than conifers. If you look for species with small leaves, chances are good you'll get something that you might someday develop into a bonsai. I'm not sure where you live, so I can't give you any suggestions on species.
Good luck, Fred |

While softwood cuttings of some conifers could be rooted under proper conditions of rooting hormone, bottom heat and mist, cutting a mature conifer branch is practically guaranteed not to work.
If you are interested in propagating some plants, collect some seedlings of any kind --- There are probably some saplings around your uncle's place. For rooting, begin with easy-to-root species like wisteria, willow (for practice), and work your way up to more complexity. Good luck, Matt
