Fighting Aphids on Fukien Tea

About a month ago the Sales Dept presented me with a large Fukien Tea Tree as a thank you gift. This week I discovered that it's leaves are sticky and so is the pot rim and surrounding area on the shelf. It appears to have aphids. I remembered something about Fukien's being sensitive to pesticides I haven't sprayed it with anything stronger than a hard spray of water.

What's the best way to treat a Fukien for pests? Is Safer's Soap insecticide safe, or should I mix up a sprayer of alcohol/water & a little dish soap?

Thanks!

Bill

Hi,

The home made mix will work..dish soap water etc...A product I use is "Graden Safe Brand Fungicide3".It is a Fungicide,Insecticide and Miticide,I have never seen it cause any problems with my trees including the Fukien Tea.I buy it in a green spray bottle from walmart etc.. for 5 dollars.Works like a charm just follow directions on the bottle.

Fukien Tea and Pestacides

Hi Bill,
I don't have a clue where the rumor started that Fukien Tea are sensitive to pestacides.... I use them on mine all the time. Heavy duty stuff too. Cygon, Kelthane, Malathion.......they don't seem to mind at all. Fukien Tea are prone to aphids and also to scale. If you have access to Cygon, use it. If not, any of the other things I named will work. Here in Florida we have very big bug problems. I don't mess around with those so called organics. In my veggie garden....yes, but if I am not going to eat it, break out the chemicals.... Good luck with you Fukien Tea.

Susieq,

The "rumor" comes from plant studies, phd holders etc..the one killer pesticide we here about on the internet causing a problem is "Diazinon".The "rumor" is it (diazinon) will kill them dead.I know Raid for ants will do them in aswell.

Diaznon is some nasty stuff, it will even kill people given the right conditions.
Although so will many of those other chemicals.

I have never had any problems with using and pesticide on a fukien tea.
For Aphids I will spray with the home made mix, and then add somr Merit to the soil. Works wonders.
I know Raid for ants will do them in aswell.
Tell me you didn't I would try a dishsoap/water mix and if that doesn't work try Neem Oil. I've read that you can handpick them or dab them with a Q-Tip dipped in alcohol as well. There are a lot of threads on this subject if you do a search you'll find plenty of information. As I recall Mr. Carl Rosner has a good mixture here somewhere but I can't find it. Good Luck and avoid chemicals if you can your tree will appreciate it!

Hey Wes, I would think that most of us have done that at one time or another. I know I did. That is one reason why I try to avoid chemicals if at all possible. Less risk is always preferable.

Thanks for the help.

The care sheet that came with the tree and several websites all warn against Diazinon and said they were finicky with other pesticides so I thought I'd check with what others have been successful with.

I'll mix up Carl's recipe, I have it in my notebook. Since the tree (along with my other tropicals) is in the iguana's room (nice & warm & they don't mind the extra light) I don't want to use pesticides unless all else fails.

Fukien Tea and pesticides

First, I never suggested Diazinon or "Raid for Ants". I do speak from personal experience...... I use Cygon, malathion and Kelthane on my Fukies all the time. They show absolutely NO adverse affects from them and these things work. I have tried some of the "soaps" and other organics. For persistant bug problems these didn't work for me. The products I named do work very well, very quickly. In the long run, you have to see what works best for you but my fukies are very healthy. It goes without saying that one has to be responsible and not over use them or be careless with them but if you can read and follow directions, you should be ok.
Best wishes,
susieq
