Fig (Ficus)
I just bought a fig tree from a local bonsai store. i have it under a 120 watt grow light in the afternoon and evenings. i noticed that alot of the leaves are starting to turn yellow and falling off. i usually water it every other day and i have noticed alot of fresh shoots on the top. what is wrong with it?

Not all ficus do this, but some of the commonly used ficus species are prone to dropping leaves whenever moved to different enviornments.Even if they are moved to warmer locations with better light they will often yellow and shed their leaves.Ficus Benjamina is famous for this.If thats the case just give it time to adjust and don't kill it with kindness(fertilize/overwater) and it should be fine.
It does however sound like you may be overwatering. The absolute #1 killer of bonsai for beginners is overwatering. It takes some time to learn and we've all killed our share while learning. The most important thing to learn is NOT to water on a shedule. A tree should be watered only when it needs it. For ficus, let the soil dry out somewhat(but never completely dry) before you water it agian, they do not like to be kept constantly wet. Feeling the soil with your finger about 3/4-1 inch deep will help you judge wether or not it need water. |

The other issue you may need to address at some point is the lighting. A 120 watt grow light is not going to provide long-term optimum lighting. Ficus need good sun light. The grow light you are using is going to provide minimal light that will result is spindly gowth on top and light near the bottom of the tree. The light simply doesn't provide anywhere need sun light. A better choice would be to get it near a bright window where it will get a lot of light but not bake it. Then supplement that light with your grow light.
I do agree with Bonsia-Gecko...most ficus will lose their leave when moved so it should recover. And I also agree to watch the watering. Good luck, Earl |
