Ficus Question
I have a question about Ficus. I am attempting to propagate a Ficus. I'm thinking that Ficus is not a deciduous tree as when I moved to California in January, the Ficus here had leaves, while the other deciduous trees had dropped theirs.
My question is, if my Ficus grows roots, it has rather big leaves. I've heard that you can, on deciduous trees, strip the leaves in early summer, and then a second group of smaller leaves will grow in their place. My 3 questions are: 1. Can this be done with Ficus? I know that if leaves are stripped off, they will grow back eventually, but will the ones that grow back be smaller? 2. Will the leaves grow back in the same place? Or will they sprout up in different places? 3. How long should it take the leaves of a Ficus to grow back?

Hi, I have two ficus benjamin, and I use to strip off the leaves on them, usually I do it on late sping of beginning of summer.
Till now the leaves grew again (fortunately), a little smaller than before and they grew in the same position than before, but some new leaves grew in other parts of the tree, in fact I use this techniques also with the purpose of new branch creation. Usually it will take about one or two weeks to begin growing and they complete the grow in about one month or sometime more. Sincerely I don't know on other species of Ficus (carica, retusa), but on benjamin I always succeed. Let me know, Bye, Cremo.

Thanks for the advice! I don't really know what kind of ficus it is, but once I try it, I'll let you know!

de-foliating leave the leaf axil, meaning do not prune right back the the branch. This will help facilitate re-growth. I've done this with several different Ficus species and was successful each time!! Enjoy!
