Seedling Ficus as Live Oak Style?

Hi all,

What do you think of a Ficus tree being styled in the Live Oak Style? I know that the bark may present a problem or at least I think it will. Let me know what you all think of this idea. Am I off my rocker or starting to slip?

I have thought of doing some type of tree in the "Angel Oak" style like the tree in the movie "the War" . The tree is in S.C. The branches of the angel oak are so long and heavy that they actually grow along the ground(some going subteranean and then re-surrfacing) this would take qiute a large tray or shallow pot, but I think it would be nice to see the structure of this type of tree on a small scale.

Just the honor it would be to have a tinkle on that mighty beast of a tree. There must be concern of the structural strength of the trunk making the props essential.

Hi,

How could one go about getting the trunk size needed and the age look that it needs. Other than waiting about 10 to 15 years. Yea I know Bonsai isn't a fast moving hobby. Just want to help develop the trunk a little faster.

Its going to be tricky growing a big trunked ficus in your part of the world, without in ground growing and a long tropical growing season it could be virtually impossible. Another thought, if you are growing inside and want something to enjoy looking at then you ficus in training is going to look terrible for most of time for a very long time as you try to get a heavy trunk then chop for taper and then grow very long escape branches all in a very large pot for root run. I,d consider the investment of buying the nicest ficus bonsai you can with the trunk and primary branches already formed.....or choose a hardy temperate species to train for your live oak. regards Andrew

Hi kingkong, Does tinkle mean the same in the U.S. as it does here in the U.K.
