Embarassed Ficus (?) Identity (Heck! It's a Camellia!)

Here is a ficus from my volunteer job .

The photos show it just as received (Well I did take the wire off!)

First photo is the "front"; second, the "back"; and, third, a leaf close-up.

The tree is about 24" tall.

I am curious as to ideas as to the variety. I will post a "fruit" photo in a reply.

I am putting "back" and "front" in quotes, because, if they are correct, this is a real "halitosis" tree. I suspect they got reversed some time ago, which put the rock in the background. (or maybe it dropped off!) We'll see what we have once I cut it back.

Since the tree lives in a greenhouse, I can cut it back hard.

It will be an accent piece in a "Chinese" garden, so any thips on Penjing style are very welcome!

Edited title to question if it is a ficus. No milky sap!

LOL Matt. At first glance at the trunk, my thought was, "That is not a ficus." Camellia seems like a reasonable ID, but I do not see to many of them down here. So, I could not verify.

Embarassed Oooops!!!

Matt is right (So what else is new??).

I took a cutting to our club meeting tonight and showed it to a local nurseryman who made the id immediately.

Good thing I only cut back to leaf pairs! (so far!)

I have started a new page in the WIKI with a photo of the leaf. Try clicking on Camellia.

(Hey! It worked!)

Maybe we should try do do this with all bonsai species.

Matt's Camellia demo

Matt's demo on Camellias is worth noting.

Any comments on this tree? (It's badly wire scarred.)

How hard can I cut it back at this time?
