Ficus "Golden Gate"

I was wondering if anyone could help me with ficus nomenclature. I have what I'm told is a Ficus "Golden Gate". I've been looking around, and have seen it referred to as Ficus retusa, Ficus microcarpa, Ficus retusa v. microcarpa, etc.....

Anybody know what it's supposed to be called?

Second question: How was the "Golden Gate" variety derived? Sounds like it originated in San Francisco. True?

Thanks
Brian

Ficus Microcarpa Retusa

Also known as...

Golden Gate
Chinese Banyan
Tiger Bark

I love these ficus and I have quite a few. Jerry mentioned in his book that these are most likely the best material for ficus bonsai.

Thanks Will. Any idea how the "Golden Gate" part got added to them? Just curious about the history....

Sorry not Retunsa
Ficus = family name (actually MORACEAE)
Microcarpa = small leafed
Retusa = Variety
Golden Gate= one of over 200 sports.

Hope that helps.
Names can and are confusing

Ron,

We had this debate before here. My thoughts and references have not changed, however the name Nitida is often cited as a synonym of Ficus retusa L which leds to confusion.

Here are some informative links on this species...

http://www.bonsaihunk.8m.com/info/Tigerbark.html

http://www.bonsaihunk.8m.com/info/FicusHo.html

I have seen Ficus Microcarpa Nitida in Malaysia growing wild. Although they are easy to grow and beautiful, I did not see the white spotted or tiger stripe bark on what is labeled Ficus Retusa Microcarpa or Ficus Microcarpa Retusa in this area. The Ficus you mentioned, Ficus Microcarpa Nitida, is commonly called the Indian Laurel Fig.

All about Ficus Microcarpa
....Ficus Retusa

Not really looking for a debate Will. Just using the terms that the nursery industry does. All the ones I deal with anyway.
Whether or not they are right is almost a mote point. Big thing is if you want to order a particular tree you must use what they call the proper name. If not you get what you get.

Don't think I mentioned the Nitida at all.
It has many different common names. Some nurseries even call it the Tigerbark.

Sorry Ron, I mixed the last debate on this subject we had with this one.

Please see the first link to Jerry's page where the "retunsa" is used with this species. It is indeed Retunsa. Ficus Retunsa Microcarpa.

Yes, as I mentioned above, one of the many common names is Tiger bark.

Here are links to three of mine I am currently working on.

http://pictures.bonsaitalk.com/show...&cat=500&page=1

http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...windswept+ficus

http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showpos...37&postcount=29

All three are Ficus Retunsa Microcarpa.
