Thanks again. I know that this will be a long term project I just don't want to have to undo things I have done wrong 5 years down the road or accidentally kill the tree. So just to clarify... I should not cut below the new branch that is in the picture? And should I still wait to make the chop in the spring even though its still growing pretty fast now? Also I was sort of trying to make a broom style out of this tree. My John Naka books say to make a v cut below any prior branches and tie up the area so that the new growth is all directed up and out. So that would not be possible with this tree because it might kill it am I correct?

One of the things I have learned over the years of Bonsai, is not to try and develop a tree that you have in your mind, but to let the tree grow and let it tell you what styles are available .
So let it grow, pinch back the leaf sheaths, and see how it back buds for the next year....
