A Few Yellowed Leaves
Howdy All,
Just my usual worrying self. I find that on my new ficus there are 8-10 leaves that have yellowed completely..They haven't fallen off, but they are yellow. The tree is kept in 70 degree temps, with 3 grow lights, one 50 watt holgen light and a humidifier next to it. I keep the lights on for 12-14 hours a day. We are talkig a larger tree, almost 3 feet in height with many, many leaves. What turns the few leaves yellow, and is it a problem? Thanks, Anthony Last edited by Oysterowl83 : 3-Feb-2005 at 08:59 PM. |

Contraty to what the definition of Evergreen is precieved as, no tree is fully evergreen. Ficus will drop leaves and grow new ones just not usually all at the same time. Though there are other things that could be causing the occasional yellow leaf, not enought light or some sort of watering issuie, it is usually not a problem to worry about.

There is also a bit browning under some of the leaves, again not major and not on MANY of the leaves.
I also wanted to mention that none of the leaves are falling..I am probably over reacting..but these trees are like babies to me! I also have included some pictures. 1) being the leaf turning yellow. 2) some brownish spots under the leaf. Anthony* |

Out with the old, in with the new. As the ficus grows new leaves, the old ones go yellow just like this. New ones sometimes appear yellow, and get darker with age.
Unless they all go yellow at once, it is nothing to worry about. pootsie |

No problem dude! The key is -- look for the new growth at the tips. If you see it there, no worries. Leaf drop is a normal adjustment to changes, but a healthy tree replaces them in no time, and often a new growth spurt is preceeded by dropping a buncha old ones.

Anthony,
I am with Poots on this one. I wouldn't worry about it much. Most likely from the change in environment. Don't be surprised if you get quite a few leaves dropping like this just from moving it from Bonsai West's tropical greenhouse to your growing area. Keep us updated Adam |

AS Adam and others say, your problem is probably due to the move.
As spring creeps in, many ficus will start to have leaf changes. Three years ago, I had to be in the hospital for a week, but had my laptop with me. My wife mentioned in panic that my nerifolia was dropping leaves. I was able to tell her (thanks to the net) that it was happening all over the east coast! ![]() |
