A few harmless questions

I was going to title this thread teaching the high plains drifters but I thought some sensitive types might get their feelings hurt. The question is what force or forces on this earth determines how a tree, plant aligns itself? Lets start with a basic scenario of an environment with no wind, snow, sand storms, copper wire and skunk apes. Why does a tree try to grow straight into the atmosphere (sky) and what is the major influence?

Light is a stimuli but in total darkness plants still grow straight from the center of the earth.

One reason, if we ignore your avatar, is the same reason you stand up straight- centrifugal force.

There is no such thing as centrifugal force. (The real force is centripetal force) Too much physics to go into now, but this is the most common misconception in the study of circular motion.

However, I believe plants grow upwards because up flavour tastes better than down flavour. Or is it gravity. They grow outwards and bend their branches to gather more light though.

Getting there but like you and I and plants.....I don't think we are aware of the earth spinning. I think of centrifugal force as the force that keeps water in a bucket when we spin it around our head.

It's been mentioned, but gravity has a strong influence on plant development, particularly in the roots which are what actually guide top growth.

Gravity and plants
