Fertilizer Question

Hi,

First off I am located in Northern California. Can I assume that I should start hitting the trees with some fertilizer now?

Also, what are people tending to use? I was thinking about trying some Biogold organic I have here but probably not enough for all my trees assuming all should be fed now. Some are pushing leaves, others swelling a bit and others still fairly dormant looking...

Anyway, is the general rule of thumb about one tablespoon per average bonsai with the Biogold? I also have Dyna-Gro 7-9-5, but usually prefer organics. By the way does the Biogold eventually dissolve or you must remove it and will it really not attract insects or turn the moss brown or get moldy?

Any input on this topic would be greatly appreciated.....

Thanks....

[QUOTE="mushashi"the general rule of thumb about one tablespoon per average bonsai with the Biogold? In other words switch between organic and inorganic.

Actually one of the directions I read somewhere from Biogold was to measure it out in tablespoons even though they are pellets....

Thanks...

I don't see that in the directions on my Biogold package. How is the tablespoon dosage suggested to be applied?

I apply BioGold generously to the surface of my soil with no ill effects. I have never bothered with measuring it out. It will get moldy sometimes, but only if we've had sopping-wet weather for a very long time. I also never remove the nuggets. I just water them in. Vinegar flies hover about from time to time, but are not a problem. I've used them for years with no ill effects, except to my wallet.

However, I am switching to home made cakes because the price of BioGold has gone up quite a bit for my local source.

HTH,
Jim

I've used Biogold for about one year without any kind of overdosing problems. I'm begining to believe that it would be almost impossible to overdose if it wasn't for the price of this stuff.
The guy who sold me Biogold has a Bonsai Garden (and devotes his life to it) aplies the doses monthly, and then removes the used pellets. I've never bothered to remove mine.
For my trainning trees (which are placed in much larger containers) for economical reasons, I use Osmocote, a controled release fertilizer for which I've made an Excel Sheet to help me dose.
You can find it here.

Expect a v2.0 by the end of the week with Imperial system units (I'm having some trouble converting it).
