fertilizer cakes and worms???

Hi all

Im new to all this...well ive been doing this for 2 months now.
I ran across a problem. I have A 15 year old chinese elm and I put a cake on it and looked it the very next day and I found about 4 little white worms under it. I removed them and have not used the cakes again. A man at potted forest.com told me I should submerge the pot under water for about 20 min to get rid of anything else inside my pot...now won't this cause root rote? should i do this? I have not spotted anymore for anout 2 weeks now. what should I do??

Fert. cakes bring about all sorts of creepy crawlers. I have started to use pelleted fert. I find it breaks down faster. Soaking your tree for 20 min. will do no harm as long as you have free draining soil. I do this to my trees once a month to purge salts out of the soil from top watering. I also put dyna gro in the water and fert. this way while I'm soaking them.

I use chemical fertilizer myself but I've heard of this problem before. Someone said if you put the cake in a tight weave bag [something like a nylon stocking] it will keep the flies and maggots away.

Re: fertilizer cakes and worms???

The white worms are grubs (larvae) usually from the common housefly. If it ocurred just a day later they were probably already present in the soil.

Fertilizer cake is usually replaced every month or so after it has begun to break down. Some folks who mix it themselves put a bit of powdered Sevin (a commercial insecticide) in along with the rest of the recipe. I don't have a big problem with bugs in mine, just squirrels who try to carry them off.

TreeBay Bonsai Tools & Supplies sells some mesh fertilizer covers designed to keep the larger bugs out. You'd find them in the supplies tab with the organic fertilizer.

Regards,

Matt
