Hi Rowan,

Sorry I can't help you with trading or propagation tips, but I just thought I'd let you know you're not alone in liking ferns. I have some under my display bench, they love the semi-shade and water run-off from the trees above. I plan to get lots more, and fill the whole under-bench area with them.

If you do manage to find any info anywhere on the web, like fernTALK or something, I'd like to know about it.

Regards,

Chris.

No luck finding a fernTALK or FernFronds.org

I don't no much about ferns beyond their basic biology from college. They reproduce from spores produced under the leaf (you can sometimes see the ripe spores if you carefully examine the underside of the fronds).

I think ferns make a perfect accent for forest trees that might have ferns in their understory, like redwood and cypress, among others.

Here are a couple links I found that look interesting.

FernTalk.com .....well actually its gardenweb, but they got a forum for any thing that needs water. And there's a thread called "Fern Fun!!!", how can you beat that? We never get "Ficus Funtime!!!" or "Bonsai Bonanza!!!."

Haha i was surprised when this popped up in new posts, i had completely forgotten about it. Well recently i visited a specialist in north wales and purchased two new ferns, a davallia and a pellaea, my collection has grown since i posted last, i now have 25 different ferns i think, havent collected all the names together yet but the ones i know are:

Bluntlobed Cliff Fern - Woodsia obtuse
Brauns Holly Fern - Polystichum braunii
Crested Hart’s Tongue Fern - Asplenium scolopendrium "Cristata"
Cut Leaved Hart’s Tongue Fern - Asplenium scolopendrium "Angustifolia"
Dwarf Holly Fern – Polystichum tsussimense
Dwarf Rosy-Buckler Fern – Dryopteris erythrosora ‘Prolifera’
Giant Chain Fern - Woodwardia fimbriata
Harts Tongue Fern - Asplenium scolopendrium
Japanese Holly Fern - Cyrtomium falcatum
Japanese Painted Fern - Athyrium niponicum
King of British Ferns – Dryopteris affinis cristata ‘The King’
Maidenhair Spleenwort - Asplenium trichomanes
Rigen’s Holly Fern – Polystichum rigens
Squirrel Foot Fern - Davallia mariesii var. stenolepsis
Button Fern - Pellaea rotundifolia

I think theyre all right, the last few are all new so i know they are but im not at home atm so i havent had a chance to check the rest. The Davallia is without question my favourite and was comparatively expensive as its very unusual as is the Pellaea.

Cheers

Oh some nice ferns there! There's one i really like,an Asplenium i think. It has small round 'leaves' on black stems, just looks fantastic. I have a fern that turned up by itself, twice now! First one died but now its back again from a stray spore. Its in with my palm in the kitchen but needs its own space. I'm pretty sure its an outdoor fern, probably a Dryopteris.

Thanks for the idea Treebeard - I love ferns too, and was trying to figure out how to incorporate them into my landscape in the back - under the benches will work great for me, helps keep from wasting all the run off from watering the bonsai.
