Brilliant Idea

I also have been thinking the same sort of thing and also would be web based to provide OS independence. I am limitied that I am a system administrator not a programmer :-)

If you need / would like any testers then please let me know as I would be glad to help out any way I can.

All the suggestions given above are all I need really, but the ability to track development over time interests me.

Keep us posted

Apollogies. I live and work in a world of windows and forget that not everybody uses it.

A suggestion then: A photo tracker? A feature where you can store photographs of your trees along with a few notes and put them side by side to track their progress.

Now i don't know the first thing about programming, so humour me here. Being a web based application would you need to be connected to the internet to use it, and would you have a central server to hold all the info? Or would it be a download with everything stored on the individual PC/mac?

I too would be willing to be a guinea pig when you have finished.

Al,

The first objective would be a central web page with a centralized database, a bit like this forum (or more like an extension to it). So it would indeed require a net connection to use it.

In the long term, however, it should be possible to piggyback a traditional application on it. That second application would be able to use either the central database or a local lighter database. That second level might be a bit more complex to develop, as it would be a cross-platform development (Windows, Mac and Linux at least) and would require some serious testing. That will also take time, as I didn't write applications with user interfaces for more than 10 years and thus need to read a lot of documentation

Quick update on the progress

Today I looked into what would be necessary to turn the web application into a normal application that would run on most platforms. I found a way to do it that wouldn't require me to rewrite everything in a different language. I still need to toy a bit with the solution before taking a firm decision. If I take this direction, the application would look like a normal Windows application in Windows, a normal Aqua application in OsX and looks the way I like in Linux.

At the moment, I have adapted the genus part as it was the simplest bit to test

6 weeks without an update, sorry about that.

I had progressed quite a lot on this project when I discovered an existing project doing almost everything I wanted Being lazy by nature, I tried it and I quite like it. I might contribute some modifications to it later on

You can download it here.

It is free for both meanings of the word, and it works just fine.

Yep, that was me, Al,

http://www.my-bonsai.com/#

Be advised to register first, follow the simple instructions carefully and you shall recieve a registration code within days of your application.

A simple clear database that enables you to record the progress of your trees with great ease, no more to say, just go see for yourself.

Regards,
Nigel

OK - great. No Windows and no Linux. I am using a Mac. Have been a big advocate of the Mac for years as I work in the entertainment industry and it is dominated by Macs. Started looking for a Mac friendly Bonsai database for tracking my trees and have found nothing so far.

A web based system that is not dependent on any OS would be great.

My simple database I have created is not much better than a spiral notebook and a photo album. Wish I new more about database stuff and web based applications.

Oh well - back to wishing...

Graydon,

Ot2 should work just fine on OsX... and even looks reasonably Aqua-ish. You just need to download QT4 for OsX on this site, install the OsX developper tools and recompile ot2. If my powerbook wasn't in a very sorry state right now (dead disk), I'd make a .dmg for you.

Mike
Update: reports on the demise of my powerbook were vastly exagerated I'm installing a few patches and I build an OsX version for you.

Rock on! I will check out the link over the weekend. No need to do a .dmg just yet - let me fumble around and try the recompile myself.

Thanks so very much!

This would be best made from a database that any OS could use. Then have a HTML front end? to access the info.
