Faux Auction

Jim Stone had a great idea over in the auction bashing thread: a faux auction. We've had some really interesting discussions about value here, and maybe we can continue to explore the matter in this way.

Vote for how much you'd bid on this tree based on what you'd do if you were in the market for something roughly similar. Or better yet, post and say what you think it's worth, and why. Don't worry, my feelings won't get hurt. Then in a few days, I'll post some details about the tree and what I think it's actually worth.

Best regards,
Carl (OMC)

OMC, I'm not comfortable with dissing your tree, but I'll try...

£15.00 top whack. I could get a bigger tree with heavier branching in a nicer pot down at B&Q... admittedly it wouldn't be a korean hornbeam, it would be a chinese elm... but if wanted a twisty trunk I'd get a chinese elm, if I wanted a korean hornbeam I'd want one with a more conventional trunk. (does that make sense)

(After saying that I hope that trunk is actually twisty and it's not just a camera angle thing...)

I'm guessing there is a chop lurking behind that 'lush' crop of leaves, I'd need to see it from another angle to tell for sure.

Also with all the branches rising upwards, looks immature, and I'm not sure about the branch (twig?) at the top-right being wired down like that... (crow, you did say...)

Again, My price: £15.00 ($25.00) at most.
Probable auction price: £50.00 ($80.00)

The tree does have great potential, but it does have a few years to go yet...

Regards,

TB

I believe in Australia we sell bonsai cheaper then the US. So I'll try and guess this. From my wholsaler friend I would be able to get this for around AUS$20. At a retailer in would be AUS$50+.

SO what I would pay would be the $20. So in US dollars I would say between $10-$20.

$8.00 tops. I have a place that I can buy these all day at that price. All trees go for about 8.00 a gallon. That stand is the best part of the whole display. What are you asking for that, I may be interested? I might give as high as 50.00 bucks for that!

Well, I would go for $20, I know, I'm cheap, so what!!! I believe here in Guatemala you might get $10 at most, because people just don't value bonsai, so, $20 is a really great price, it's only because it's you, I'm helping you out here pal... Don't insist, I won't give more... Nevermind, won't buy it anyway... !!!!!!!!
