Always keep them covered!!! They're sneaky little rascals.

Even a moat won't keep them out.

Pootsie, the last pic is for you. I have three cats that patrol my back yard, and the worst things they do are sleep in the bigger pots and occasionally break off a twig rubbing up on the bonsai. One is sixteen (almost seventeen) years old and deaf as a post!!!

There are actually a number of products and ways to keep cats away from places and stuff you want to keep scratch-free.

There are odour-filled spray cans (not catnip though ) that can be used at spots where the cats are not supposed to be - some of them are more effective than others.

Another trick is to make sure you have a water sprayer handy every time a cat approches the forbidden area and shout "No!" or "Bad cat!" or something as you spray them right in the face... After a few times all you have to do is say no if they even think about going near that spot again. You have to be consistent though and do this every time... This has helped me a few times, but I've not been too strict with that policy so they still occationally take a bite here and there.

I've found that my cats (Fred and Bob) don't like cologne....by the way, the more expensive, the better!!!

Our kitty actually servers as guard to protect our trees from those nasty squirrels and chipmunks. Here she is overseeing her flock.

She's also very good at helping me build a forrest planting.

Here she is:

#1 Helping me choose a pot....obviously too deep.
#2 Checking to be sure all the pots are empty
#3 Helping me place one of the rocks

As far as using our bonsai for a bathroom our kitty hasn't had that issue yet. We do giver her an outdoor play garden (we call it the kitty zen garden). It's a plant flat filled with Turface and some rocks. She doesn't use it as a littler box but she does love to scratch around in it, roll in the Turface, and scratch the rocks. It works great and it's much easier to get Turface out of her fur before she brings it indoors.
