Fall Is Around The Corner-what Will You Be Doing

Well, fall is almost here in Youngstown, Ohio. Days are getting shorter. It gets dark about 8:30 rather than 9:30. Temps have been around 80* rather than 90*. We are starting to get rain more often. My grass is almost green again. I am also starting to see alot of new growth on my trees in training, as well as my landscape trees. Some trees in my neighberhood are already changing colors.
I was just wondering what everyone was doing this fall, as far as bonsai goes. I will start making a mini-greenhouse soon. I will make some more grow boxes. I am thinking of repotting some trees into the grow boxes, but I will probly wait untill spring. This will be my first time repotting, and doing root work. So I want to make sure all conditions are at best for greatest results. I will switch fertilizers in October or November from fish emulsion to an organic tomato feed @ 0-5-5. This is what Al uses in his stinky back yard at this time of year. Other than that I will just let everything grow, with the exeption of some pinching on a couple of Junipers. Ohh yeah, I will be trying to do some air layering, and taking cuttings. I,m just trying to see if I can do it this time of year. I started an air layer on a juniper today, and took some cuttings from an azalea. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes.
So, what will you all be doing?

Fall duties

Doody: Let me see... things that I have started doing for fall. First is as always weeds, pull weeds and water every day. Then end of summer pruning. Olive suckers are cut, elms are cut back hard. Tridents are cut back very hard. Zlcovas are pruned up. Privit is hedged up. I am cutting celtis for trunk lines. In three weeks I will srtart setting olive cuttings for next spring. I am planting in rows last springs olives. I will also be planting rows of shimpaku. Collecting coark oak seeds maple seeds celtis seeds. Mix and sift 10 cubic yards of bonsai soil. Plant all root cuttings into five gallon pots, catlin elm, verigated zlcova, coark barked elm, contorted elm and cedar elm. This will take all of the bonsai soil and I will have to mix more. There is no end of what I will be doing this fall.

I am glad that I enjoy what I do.

Dern Rip you will be very busy. I too am planning a green house. I plan to make the frame out of PVC and the end walls of exterior plywood. I havent many trees to work with so Besides working my fall garden I will probaly be scouting collecting material. I plan to mark them with plastic flagging and get them at the break of spring. I may also start working on collecting bonsai pots that I will need to have actual bonsai, and studying more on root pruning methods. I also plan to study up on species spacific methods of propegating. Mainly I will enjoy the out doors free from Misquitos.

I'll be smoking 20 lbs. of brisket this weekend for the summer finale but I'll still have time to fiddle with some trees. It's starting to cool down [highs in the upper 80's] so the trees will get another 4 week growth spurt before any cold weather comes. I'll be checking all the trees in training adjusting and rewiring if necessary, removing air layers, checking ground layers. topping off the soil if need be. And I no I souldn't but I saw some nice 5 gallon boxwood at Walmart the other day marked down to $9.95. I'll probably get a couple and try to wedge them into a growing spot. Oh yeah, weeding, there's always weeding to do!

Things to do this fall

Whidn:
Here is something that I do that may help. Cover your structure with shade cloth fiirst and then put your plastic over the shade cloth. This way you get a winter green house and when the tempratures get high you can pull the plastic off and you have a summer shade structure.

rips I see that you will be cutting elms and zelkovas back pretty hard. I need to do so also, but I thought I had to wait till spring. Can I get away with it now?

I'll be putting my cottoneaster in a cascade pot, replanting my 'pepper tree', and putting my other trees in a mini-greenhouse. I also have to build that greenhouse first

In September I am joining a bonsai club, so that should be fun! They are having a whole meeting on overwintering, so that should make things easier.

I'll be collecting as much seed as I can this autumn. There doesn't appear to be much specific information (I'm sure Matt can prove me wrong!) out there about what to do with various british seeds, so I'm going to try to find out for myself.

I too will be joining a club in September, the first meeting will be a workshop, hope my trees don't get rubbished too much
