Extending and Shaping Foliage Pads on Junipers
During reading, it was noted that one of the beginners mistakes when styling Junipers, is to end up with a bare branch extending from the trunk, which ends in a 'pom-pom' of a foliage pad.
If the bare segment of a Juniper branch is too long and bare, is there some way that foliage can be induced to grow back on the branch towards the trunk? ie extending the foliage pad back towards the trunk? I suppose this might be similar to back budding of pine trees. When shaping foliage pads on Junipers do you just nip off the growing tips of new growth as it arises? I have read that a Juniper which is nipped hard will revert to the juvenille form of growth type. Some books talk about nipping back growth almost daily! What is the correct way to shape Juniper foliage pads please? Thanks, Lee |
