Europe Swelters 100+!How Are Trees?

The papers and news media here in the US are reporting record breaking temps of 100+! People are collapsing and we are being told that you haven't had this kind of heatwave ever! I lost 40% of my material in June from 104 weather!
I was hoping to hear from you all about conditions and how you and your trees are doing? (Treebeard, Walter, Emperor Fish and Rene and others).
I lost so many because of inexperience. I was hoping you had some pointers for us about surviving the heat for both man and his trees!!!!!

Stay cool! and wear your shades !

Hi Lesley,

I can't really comment on the rest of Europe, but i think that in the UK it has been blown out of all proprtion, we had about a week of good weather and then it threw it down (rained) yesterday all day where i live and is much cooler and fresher today, you get two days of good weather in this counry and people and the news say were in a heat wave. The temperature record was beaten by 0.1 of a degree c last week taking it just above 100 degree f but at heathrow airport, which would suggest to me that heat from plane engines may of had something to do with it. I didn't realy worry about my trees while it was hot and they've come through fine, just pleanty of water on a night, the big trees sheild the little ones a bit and all of them together creates a bit of humidity.

As for the rest of europe, that looks to have been/be worse with the river po in italy drying up, forest fires all over the place and people collapsing left right and centre in paris. Someone from there might tell you how there trees are fairing. I asume they use shaderies to keep temps down on there trees and provide pleanty of water.

I geuss were lucky in the uk and get lots of weather fronts coming in off the Atlantic.

Jonny.

Here in Finland the heat wasn't so big problem the temperature was at highest about 32 C (90 F) that is a very high temperature here, but when you had your trees in shade and give them enough water there is almost no problem, just few sunburns.

But the situation in Mediterranean is enough bad whitout few psykos whit their molotovs.

Hi Lesley & all,

I happen to live about 10 miles from Heathrow airport, where the UK record was broken (37.9 deg C I think) The planes do not really add heat. The area around heathrow is obviously quite flat, does not get a lot of wind, so that is mostly why it gets so hot there.

My Bonsai Temps in our back garden have (according to our little thermometer) regularly been over 40 deg C for over a week now... I am very pleased to report absolutely no problems. They all get a major soaking when I get home from work, about 6pm. That's all. I have lots of gravel under the bonsai, that gets well wetted also, providing good humidity as it evaporates.

Regards,

TB

hi treefans,
we are down in the westcountry, cornwall and weve had three weeks of unbroken sunshine average temp 32.
As of yet I have only lost a few potensi ,nothing to preciouse, but I have had to stack everything up in the shade and water at least three times a day ,drenchings at that.
However my pine collection has even thrived with a second strong growth of healthy thick candles, they cetainly like it hot .I have misted them regularley and wtered throughout . Its very hard work though and I think when it breaks and we get a down pour I will be very relieved.

A little tip I have resorted to is wrapping a lot of small poted trees up in wet soaked news paper , around the pot and roots ,this sems to have worked well as you can regularly wet it to keep those all important roots COOL!

Hi everybody,
We have over 15 days till now with temps over 35 C everyday. So far no deaths, but some trees are struggling, mainly a couple japanese maples. I have a shade screen and I soak the leaves, and surroundings at least twice a day.
Temperatures are supposed to lower down under the 30 degrees C form today for a couple of days or so. After that, abck up aggain, but not as much as previous days. So hopefully the maples will recover.

I have a friend that lives in the desert outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. For him the sun is always a problem.
Last time I visited him he had found a way to beat the heat.
He simply laid a sheet of tin foil loosely over the soil in his bonsai pots. This reflected the suns rays and helped cool his pots. It did seem to work pretty well.
Not pretty but maybe a good temporary solution to the problem.

Ron,
Your friend in Nevada is taking a risk then. The foil around the pots will do a wonderfull job of keeping his tree's roots cool, however, wouldn't the foliage be copping the reflected sun's rays?

The big problem is the roots and not the foliage.
Most people know that the stoma (sp) on the leaves close on hot days. This stops transpiration and helps the plant hold onto moisture. But most don't know that the same happens when the roots get above about 90 degrees F.
This happens quite quickly in our little usually dark bonsai pots on a sunny day. Cooling the roots at least will make moisture available to the plant.
