Eucalyptus not in great shape
Hello all,
I am new here, and I am glad I found a community with a forum that really feels right for me. Here is the deal. I am a beginner at bonsai, a bit less than a year of interest. I have a Juniper Mallsai (which was bloody Hell to fix, but is doing very nicely) and I found a small Eucalyptus (an actual tree, not bonsai), couldn't be more than a few years, at a local nursery. Honestly, down in Flori-duh is not the ideal place for... well, anything. The scary little man at the nursery didn't really know anything about his plants, much less how to keep them alive. Soooo many plants were browned or in their wrong setting. But this little eucalyptus looked more or less decent, a little browning on the leaves, but didn't look too bad. After some research I did realize that I'm not in prime climate for it. Eucalyptus are also not too great on losing roots. They recover with a lot of difficulty. But, with some care, I did what I had to do. I also know that last month was not exactly primetime for repotting it, but in climates like this, Eucs are more likely to pull through than where seasons do change. I followed a lot of advice I found online, and I think it may pull through. A couple of leaves sprouted, it looked good. I made sure to keep it on my sill, where it got full light as instructed for most varieties of Eucs. However, these past few days, the leaved have been slightly droopy and... uh... crispy. That's the only word. The leaves crispified, but DID NOT brown beyond what was already there (which actually looks better than it did when I rescued it). I think it's dying, but I honestly am a bit lost and was wondering what everyone though. Can someone delete my other, almost the same post? I doubled it by accident... Hi Aisoku69,
The Euc looks like Eucalyptus gunnii ( Cider Gum ). Native to Tasmania ( Southern Australia ) at an altitude of 700-800 meters. They grow well in miost boggy areas. I find that Euc like full sun. ( Out side ) Although I have mine in semi shade. That is morning sun, little afternoon sun because of the shallow pot. Repotting of Euc should be done in the hotter months. Here I repot from the middle of October Through to end of December which is our summer. I Hope this is of some help Good Luck Peter |

Actually, thanks. I really don't like not knowing EXACTLY what my plant is, so knowing it's gunnii is already half of my solution. Are your leaves crispified like mine, or are they pliable and delicious-looking (not that I would eat it...)?

Peter,
Thanks for the information... since my leaves are crispified (and in my experience, that usually means... uh... trouble), is it safe to freak out and assume my darling baby is dead/dying? Any suggestions on what I could do to help it? Thanks, Julian
