And FWIW, that trunk isn't really all that exceptional. The flat topped trunk would require a considerable amount of post collection development in a new substantial leader.

Thanks Fly that was the info I was after and was fearing. I havn't seen an easy gum root system yet. I haven't given up yet though. I will still go back and look again to get a better idea of what is going on with these trees.
I really don't understand what all the concern is with this area though. The place is littered with trees that have gone down the path that this tree is headed. if it doesn't get washed away it will probably drown. If I left this site as was after I dug the tree out any evidence that I was even there would be gone with the first rain. There are many trees in this area not just a few super trees. The only thing is that they are no more than ten years old if that. The dam is over 50 years old.

Even thogh we are in drought this is a river bed and still wet, very wet.
I think this gum would make a very impresive bonsai with a carved out trunk. It would be perfect for a style I have wanted to see in gum bonsai that we see here very often in large specimens. Like I stated though it is not just this tree I am interested in but ones that have grown into root over rock like I have never seen in a gum before.
I should have a go at a virt but I am not very good with them.
I will post pictures of the other trees in this area when I get them.

I dont' think it would because it's realy too short to do much with. Carving it out won't make it taller. If there were a foot or more additional height, then you might have something. The trunk as it is now lacks taper and is unlikely to produce much in a comfortable time line.

Like this picture from barmah state park during a flood yes they can survive and even relish these floods. I am well aware of this. But how long do you think these trees would live if the water was totally covering them wich is what I am talking about.
