Eucalyptus to Collect

I have found some ripper gums to collect. This is about the only one that I got a picture off. It is on the side of a small cliff that is eroding away.
The main question I have is when to collect it. Any suggestions on how would also be appreciated.
If I was too trim the roots it may get washed away in the next big rain. If we ever get rain .
If I can work out how to collect these trees I may have hit the Eucalyptus jackpot.
Some have grown to rock and I think the only way to get them out would be with a cement type saw. I have never seen a root over rock Eucalyptus. I am liking the thought that these could be something great if I can work out how to get them out. There is also the possibility that any large amount of rain could put them under water.
I will consentrate on getting this one out first maybe and get some pics of the others.
I found them at the end of a day hike back were I first started .
I didn't get a chance to take more pics or much exploretry digging.
the good thing is they are only about a 20 minute drive away.

G'day Soltan bit of a quandry here because do you think the tree(s) will survive the excavation? I am a lover of yamadori but not at the expense of (a) the health of the tree and (b) the impact to the environment. These are considerations you must weigh up prior to your actions. I am not a greeny tree hugger but I take life seriously and if the effort is not worth your time then go to a nursery and pick out the better species for your enjoyment.

Kindest regards Ash

Yep I want them but will they survive. I am happy to take the time to consider this and make trips out there to give more consideration. The gum is a tricky one isn't it. If this was a maple I would have it home in no time flat.
I am unsure how safe these trees are here. They have obviously been there for some time but I don't think this guarantees thier survival. There are no large trees here I think heavy rain takes it's toll. I will not use this as an excuse to kill them though I want to be as sure I can get them to live.

im with ash, you like hiking and surfing too it appears.
i would be more inclined to leave them there for the reasons previously stated.
leave them there and use the photos for inspiration.

i think you would be robbing everyone of the same pleasure you attained when you spotted them.

Another problem is that the roots of this tree are going to be holding this unstable embankment together. If you remove it, when the rrots begin to rot it will allow a huge chunk to fall away, possibly causing a small landslip further up. It only takes one snowball to cause an avalance.

What about if they have to go scuba diving to appreciate them. There are some larger dead trees here that I am guessing large rains have taken there toll on. If these trees go under water they will be lost. We have been in drought here for a long time but it will not last forever.
Maybe I am rong like I said I want to give this alot of consideration. Some are definitly un-colectable.

Thanks for all the quick replies. Please take my last two posts as up one reply as you'se are too fast for me

These are pics of the area that I want to collect from(also my daughter and I) as you can see the land has already been raped. There are cliffs and soil erosion going on everywere below the tree line. I wonder if removing these trees will cause any more ill effects. Like I said I believe this area goes underwater when we have excesive rain. The water can and does flow over the dam.
we hicked to the top of the hill in the background it was only when I returned that I relised these trees where here.

hi soltan, it will depend alot on the species as to wether they will survive in water. if it is growing near water then it would be safe to assume it is water tolerant, eg eucalyptus camaldulensis ( river red gum ).

fire can kill large eucys, despite the lignotuber. possible reason for lack of other mature specimens.

lack of mature leaves also makes this one hard to i.d.

I live a stones throw from thick thick bush and there are several little trees about the place that I want permission to take. Something tells me I won't get it, but We'll see. If not, a neighbour owns a lot of the land, so I'll just ask him.

Also in the spirit of Aussy natives, can anyone point me to any threads on natives?

Thanks.

I don't think any tree survives totally under water (wich is what I mean) not even our mighty Red River gum
