enkianthus
Does anyone have information or first hand knowledge about Enkianthus perulatus as bonsai? The plant is from Japan, but until now I have only seen a picture of one as a bonsai in The March/April 1997 issue of BCI's Bonsai Magazine.
The bark is a striking smooth white. The branch and leaf structure is like an azalea. Flowers are little white urn shapes. Fall color is brilliant red. It has all the criteria for a great bonsai species. I bought this one two years ago from a local nursery. It was the only one they had, and I have never seen them for sale here before. I am trying to air layer mine with no success yet, but the base is sprouting leaves so I will either end up with two trees or one shohin. Carmen |
