Now in my 40's I realize that I know nothing, never did actually and I sure wish I would have listened to my father more.

I look back at my pictures of my first bonsai and realize just how foolish and ignorant I was then, sure wish I would have listened way back then.

Good thread Will. You are absolutely correct. We need to be humble enough to listen to others, but honest enough to recognize discrepancies. How much knowledge is missed because of ego? How much untruth is accepted as gospel because we are too naive (or timid) to know the difference? The answer lies between. An honest, polite open-mindedness is always a good philososphy. Learn what you can, while you can. Teach when the opportunities arise. Both attributes can exist simultaniously.

A corallary to your proverb, again from traditional martial arts:

A prospective student approaches a master, and asks, "How long must I study to obtain a black belt?" The master answers, "It depends on you, but a good student may take 7 - 10 years."

In reply the student says, "What if I devote myself to study, and exclude all other outside pursuits but obtaining my black belt? How long will it take then?" The master replys, "Oh, then it will take 15 years."

The student responds, "What if I'm the most dedicated student you have every had, and spend every waking minute in pursuit of my black belt?" The master answers, "Then it will take 20 years."

The student says, "That makes no sense. The harder I pursue my goal, the shorter time it should take." The master says, "With your eyes so focused on your goal, you are sure to spend much time lying on your face after tripping over the stones at your feet."

In other words, walk before you run. Focus on what you're doing NOW. Do it the best you can, and the ultimate goal will take care of itself. The journey matters more than the ultimate destination.

This seems to me perfect for bonsai. Horticulture first - dead trees are hard to train. Grow a trunk with nebari. Move to the primary branches. Don't rush the process.

Oh, you've seen my collection?!?!

Good point Brian. We are often in such a rush to "have" a bonsai that we fail to "do" bonsai. At least I was.

Good message in this thread.

I want to be an empty cup.

sigh...

I also can't help but comment that it's strange how such a benign thread/statement can still elicit defensiveness. How in the world does this thread point any fingers?!?

Geez, let's gett off of it for a while and...(((gasp)))...SMILE a little more!!!

Thanks, Will.

"When I was 14 years old,my father was so dumb and stupid, I could hardly stand to be around him. When I turned 21 , I was suprized how much the old man had learned in just 7 years." Mark Twain... Good thread we could all stand more humility. I once had the honour and privilige of meeting Master Saburo Kato. He came to our club and went around and critiqued each of our trees. I was very impressed with his quiet dignity, and bearing. I swear, If you had written the word "Master" on a piece of paper and threw it up, I believe it would have floated over and stuck to him. He at last came to my tree, made several suggestions, and then very quietly, and unfearsomelike ask me . Do you know how to create Jin. ? Without thinking ,I answered Yes. He quietly said that that was good ,that I knew. He made a few more comments then moved on.He said no more about Jin. I regretted my answer from the moment I gave it. Why hadn"t I just said No I don't know anything. compared to him I didn't and, still don"t. I've allways wondered what he was going to tell me. Though I'm a reasonably quiet and unassuming person, that day My Cup was a little too full. Regards Blue.
