Dale, I have a couple of thoughts. It's probably somewhat easy for any of these guys that have seen your (or anyone else's) work in person to place an order with confidence. Someone that has never looked at one of your pieces is making somewhat of a leap of faith. Much simpler at a show to pick up the ones I like and buy them, I'm sure.
As far as time spent with potential customers that don't make a purchase, that's just part of doing business. It happens to everyone. You should give it a try with a kitchen remodel or a bedroom/bathroom addition.
In your situation, I think it might be good business to ask for a deposit before you started work on a piece. Or perhaps it would be more trouble than it was worth. Probably depends on how often you get shafted after you complete a piece.
Take care,
zube

Rockm and Zube,
Good comments,
I've NEVER asked for money up front on a commissioned pot. I GUESS the biggest reason is that on the couple of instances that the customer didn't take it....it always sold at a show. I never got "stuck" with a piece that I couldn't sell. So far, so good.
Also, I never know what shipping is either until it's gone .

Zube, yea I'm SURE other business folks waste LOTS of time on people just shopping.

"I will stop by at the Spring PBA. I try to get there first thing the opening Saturday morning. Look back at your payment records for several years. You've taken a couple of hundred dollars from me over the last ten years or so... "

Lets hope they can come up with a better vending deal this year so I can come! After 15ish years of vending there I hate to see it fade away.
and,
Thanks for the sales!

" I began to understand a little when I ordered a larger tray from Albright a few years back. He had to make it four times, as every one kept warping or cracking, either in the drying process or in the kiln. It really pi@#ed him off ;-) and he lost money on that order. "

Man, been there, done that..... THEN, when they get the pot they never send you a pic of it potted!

Mike, you musta done some "shoehornin' " to get that in that pot!

Yeah, the past spring show sales area was kind of silly from what I heard (I missed this year because of a business trip). Heard the sales area was out by the NY Ave. entrance near the old brick kilns. Might as well be on Jupiter...Also heard space wasn't cheap.

So the next chance to catch Dale is in one week in Ann Arbor, MI right If my memory serves me correctly anyway. I really want to make that show.

I was planning on hitting the Chicago show this weekend but my truck sprung a gas leak thus I have been replacing gas lines, brake lines, fuel pump and sending unit. Gotta love them old trucks!!! Oh well, working on the truck has really made me appreciate my actual job and appreciate my time with my bonsai that much more! After getting a quote for $1100 to do the job (and that was before I dropped the tank and found the bad brake line) I decided to save more $ for trees and do the job myself. Have a little over $500 into it, not including my time.

Newt,
Yes, I'll be at Ann Arbor this Friday afternoon until Sunday eve.

BTW, This time last year had to replace the brake lines before going to a show in NY. Earlier in the spring I broke a serpentine belt on the way home from PBA show in April. . A month after the Sept. repairs I HAD to get front end rebuilt and aligned while at a show in Miami BEFORE I dare drive home. After I got home I decided "that's It!" I spent more on on my big van last year than it was worth, so the next week I traded it in on a new van. Feel better. There is NOTHING more nerve wracking than waiting for your van to break down on the way to a show.
Regards,
Dale
